01Why Baška Voda Works for Toddlers

Baška Voda is a small resort on the Makarska Riviera in Central Dalmatia. The Biokovo mountain range rises directly behind the town. The coast is almost one continuous stretch of small pebbles, and the town centre, port, restaurants and most beaches lie along one flat promenade. A family can reach nearly everything on foot or with a stroller, with no steep streets or stairs between the apartment and the sea.

The town is livelier than neighbouring Brela and louder in the evenings than Podgora. A few bars with music sit right at the water, mostly in the centre and toward Ikovac. Families with babies who nap early are better placed away from the port, toward Podluka, Promajna or the pine-shaded outskirts.

02Best Beaches for Toddlers and Small Children

Nikolina Beach

Nikolina runs from the port to Stazica beach and holds a Blue Flag. It has showers, changing cabins, WCs, cafés, a rescue service and sea access for people with reduced mobility. That last feature also helps with strollers. It is the most convenient option for short sessions between meals and naps.

Podluka Beach

Podluka lies between Ikovac and the port. It has a children's playground, showers, cabins, WCs, restaurants and sunbed and parasol rental. Entry into the water is shallow, which suits toddlers. Natural shade is limited, so a rented parasol or a pop-up UV tent is needed from mid-morning.

Promajna Beach

Promajna is a few kilometres from the centre. The seabed slopes very gently, so water stays shallow for several metres. It is the best choice for paddling with babies and grandparents. The route from town is a flat coastal path, but the distance in July heat is a lot with a stroller. Go in the morning or take a car or local bus back.

Oseka Beach

Oseka is a bay just outside the centre. It has a beach bar and a small playground. Dogs are allowed there, which matters if a child is nervous around animals.

Beach Gear and Costs

  • Pebbles are small but hot by early afternoon. Water shoes for children aged 1-6 are more useful than flip-flops.
  • A sunbed-and-parasol set on the Makarska Riviera usually costs €10-20 per day, depending on position and month. Much of the shoreline is free public space.
  • Sea temperature is usually around 22-25 °C from late June to early September. June and September have calmer crowds and are less hot for infants.

03Where to Stay with a Toddler

Apartments in the centre or close to Nikolina and Podluka suit families best because they provide a kitchen, a washing machine and a separate room for naps. Check for a lift or ground-floor access if you travel with a stroller, and for air conditioning, which is not guaranteed in older houses.

Hotel Horizont is a beachfront hotel with a kids' pool and children's activities. Family Resort Urania is in a pine forest just outside town and offers a playground and kids' entertainment. Both are all-in-one options if you want to avoid cooking and booking separate activities.

A frequent mistake is booking the cheapest apartment on the hill above the old coastal road. The savings disappear once you carry a toddler, a bag and a stroller uphill in 32 °C heat on every beach trip. Choose a place within 300 m of the sea, even if it costs €20-30 more per night.

04Getting There and Getting Around

Split Airport (SPU)
about 60 km, roughly 50-60 minutes by car on the D8 coastal road and A1 motorway. Taxis and private transfers are the easiest with car seats; pre-book a transfer with the seats you need.
Makarska
about 10 km southeast, with larger supermarkets, pharmacies and a health centre.
Child seats
Croatian law requires an approved child seat for young children. Rental cars usually charge extra for them, so reserve in advance.
Buses
Coastal buses connect Baška Voda with Split and Makarska, but timetables are looser in low season.

05Things to Do with Young Children

Promenade walks
Evening walks along the waterfront are the standard activity. Ice cream stands and small playgrounds along the way keep toddlers busy.
Beach water toys
Kayak, pedalo and inflatable rentals appear on Nikolina and Podluka in summer. Check the age and weight minimums for each activity before booking.
Boat trips
Short boat rides from the port are possible in the season. Confirm that life jackets in children's sizes are on board.
Day trips
Makarska's old harbour and Brela's pine-lined beaches are easy day trips. Biokovo Nature Park has a road to the high viewpoint, but it is cold and windy at the top, so bring layers for children.

06Eating Out with Children

Most restaurants on the promenade serve simple children's food such as pasta, grilled fish, chicken, fries and fresh fruit. Dinner in Croatia often starts after 19:00, and kitchens are busiest at 20:00-21:00, so go at about 18:00 for a calm table. Local supermarkets and bakeries cover baby food, nappies and fruit, but specific formula brands and special-diet products are easier to find in Makarska.

07Practical Local Tips

  1. Beach time: Aim for 08:00-11:00 and again after 17:00. Between 12:00 and 16:00, plan a nap in air-conditioned rooms.
  2. Sun: Use SPF 50, UV swimwear and hats. The Dalmatian sun is strong even when it seems cloudy.
  3. Sea urchins: They live on rocky patches at the edges of the beaches. Water shoes protect little feet.
  4. Health: Emergency number in Croatia is 112. EU residents should carry a European Health Insurance Card, and others should have travel insurance.
  5. Season choice: June and early September offer cheaper rooms and fewer queues than July and August.
