01The Trade-Off: Bol vs. Surrounding Towns
Choosing where to stay on Brač Island usually comes down to budget versus convenience. Bol is the most famous destination on the island, primarily because of Zlatni Rat beach. However, that popularity drives up the cost of accommodation and dining. Travelers with rental cars or a willingness to use local buses often look at smaller, cheaper towns nearby.
Comparing the average summer rates of 2026, mid-range apartments in Bol average €140 to €180 per night, while equivalent rentals in towns like Sumartin or Postira sit between €80 and €115 per night. If you only plan to visit Zlatni Rat once or twice during your trip, it rarely makes sense to pay the Bol premium. Save your money here and spend it on something better, like a private boat tour to the nearby islands or fresh seafood dinners.
Bol: What You Gain and What You Give Up
What you gain: Convenience is the primary benefit of staying in Bol. You get walkable access to Zlatni Rat via the shaded pine promenade, direct catamaran connections to Split and Hvar, and a wide selection of restaurants and bars around the harbor.
What you give up: You pay significantly more for accommodation. During July and August, Bol is heavily crowded with day-trippers from the mainland. The town center can feel congested, and quiet spaces are harder to find.
Murvica: The Close and Quiet Neighbor
Murvica is a tiny village located just 5 kilometers west of Bol.
- Prices
- €90 to €130 per night.
- Distance to Bol
- 10-minute drive or a steep, ambitious walk.
- Beaches & Atmosphere
- Murvica has its own clear, pebbled beaches that are completely free from the crowds of Zlatni Rat. The atmosphere is rural, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It is also the starting point for the hike to the 15th-century Dragon's Cave.
- The Trade-Off
- You gain peace and proximity, but you give up amenities. Murvica lacks large supermarkets or a wide choice of restaurants, meaning you will still rely on Bol for groceries and dining out.
Sumartin: The Eastern Ferry Hub
Located on the far eastern tip of Brač, Sumartin is a traditional fishing village.
- Prices
- €80 to €110 per night.
- Distance to Bol
- 24 kilometers. The drive takes 30 to 35 minutes.
- Beaches & Atmosphere
- Sumartin is quiet and authentic. It has a modest pebble beach and a working harbor. It connects directly to the mainland via the Makarska car ferry, making it highly convenient for travelers driving up the coast.
- The Trade-Off
- You gain excellent prices and a direct ferry link, avoiding the busy Split-Supetar route. You give up quick access to Bol's nightlife. The 35-minute drive means Bol is a day-trip destination rather than somewhere you pop into for a quick morning coffee.
Postira and Milna: Northern and Western Alternatives
Towns on the northern and western coasts offer entirely different environments.
- Postira
- Located 29 kilometers north of Bol (a 50-minute drive). Nightly rates average €85 to €115. Postira offers a relaxed coastal feel and is close to Lovrečina Bay, one of the rare sandy beaches on Brač. Arriva buses connect Postira to Bol in about 55 minutes for around €6 to €8.
- Milna
- Located 37 kilometers west of Bol (a 50-minute drive). Known as a major sailing hub with a deep natural harbor and multiple marinas. Prices average €95 to €125 per night. The bus from Milna to Bol is less frequent and takes longer, making a rental car necessary.
02Getting into Bol: Parking and Commuting
If you base yourself outside of Bol, you need to factor in the logistics of visiting for the day.
Driving and Parking
Driving into Bol during the summer requires patience. The main parking area for Zlatni Rat is large but fills up quickly by mid-morning in July and August.
- Parking Prices
- The official lots near Zlatni Rat charge around €2 per hour or €10 to €25 for a full day, depending on the specific zone and proximity to the water.
- Town Parking
- There is a public car park near the Tommy supermarket (around Ulica Ante Starčevića) which is a 10-minute walk to the town marina. Street parking follows the Croatian color-coded system: white lines mean free parking (which is extremely rare in summer), while yellow lines indicate restricted or reserved spots.
Local Buses and Boats
If you want to avoid driving, Arriva operates local buses across the island. The main hub is Supetar. The bus from Supetar to Bol takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, costing €6.30 one way. Once in Bol town, you do not need a car to reach the beach. A tourist train runs from the town center to Zlatni Rat for €4 one way, or you can take a small taxi boat from the harbor directly to the beach for the same price.
03The Verdict: Who Should Stay Where?
- Stay in Bol
- if you are traveling without a car, want daily access to Zlatni Rat without a commute, and prefer having multiple restaurants and bars within walking distance.
- Stay in Murvica
- if you have a rental car and want a quiet, scenic retreat that is still less than 10 minutes from Bol's restaurants.
- Stay in Sumartin
- if you are traveling on a strict budget, entering Brač via the Makarska ferry, and only plan to visit Bol for a single day trip.
- Stay in Postira
- if you prefer a traditional village atmosphere with access to sandy beaches on the north coast, and do not mind a 50-minute drive south to see Bol.
