Essential Ground Rules

  • Park at the main municipal gravel lot located immediately outside the town walls on the main approach road (€2 per hour, payable via local parking apps or coins). The historic center is strictly pedestrian and monitored.
  • Leave the travel stroller in your trunk. The severe cobblestones, narrow historic alleys, and steep stone stairs require a sturdy baby carrier or framed hiking backpack for child transport.
  • Public restrooms sit near the main parking area and cost €0.50 to enter. Diaper changing stations are nonexistent inside the old town walls, so handle all changes in your vehicle before entering.
  • Dine at Konoba Vero or aMano for outdoor terrace seating with adequate space for restless kids. Order plain Istrian fuži or pljukanci pasta for toddlers (€12-€15 per portion) while adults eat the local truffle specialties.
  • Walk the exterior defensive walls. The wider, flatter paths along the perimeter provide safe, vehicle-free spaces for young children to walk off energy while offering clear views of the Mirna River Valley.

Skipping the indoor art galleries is the smartest choice parents can make here; small, fragile ceramics displayed at toddler height and energetic young children are a disastrous combination.
