Top Island Alternatives
- Vis Island
- Located 30 nautical miles from the mainland, Vis requires a 1-hour and 10-minute fast catamaran ride from Split via Krilo Fast Ferries. Foot passenger tickets average €32, with cheaper fares starting at €15. The island features the 19th-century Fort George and the quiet fishing village of Komiža. Skipping Hvar entirely in favor of Vis is the smartest decision a traveler can make in peak summer.
- Šolta Island
- Reached by a 30-minute ferry ride from Split to the port of Rogač. Passenger tickets run between €8 and €32 depending on the season. The island is agricultural and quiet, featuring family-run olive oil presses in the inland village of Grohote.
- Šćedro
- A protected nature park located 2.5 kilometers off Hvar’s southern coast. The island operates off the grid with no cars and no municipal water. It serves as an excellent stop for independent sailors seeking empty overnight anchorages in bays like Porteruša.
- Korčula
- Accessible via a 2-hour fast ferry from Split for approximately €25. While still a top destination, its medieval walled old town and dense pine forests draw history buffs rather than late-night party crowds.
- Pakleni Islands (Sveti Klement)
- Reached by a 10 to 20-minute water taxi from Hvar Town. While the main bay at Palmižana gets busy, the remote coves on the southern side of Sveti Klement provide isolated swimming spots away from the mainland congestion.
