01Best Beaches in Jelsa

Jelsa sits on the north coast of Hvar. It has some of the few sandy beaches on the island, and most of the island's other beaches are pebble or rock. The town is quieter and more family-oriented than Hvar Town. It is also the starting point for the south coast through the Pitve tunnel.

Mina Beach

Mina is the main beach in Jelsa. It is a sandy, shallow bay, and the shallow water suits small children. Distance from the center is usually given as 500 m to 1 km, which is a 10-minute walk along a shaded path by the sea. Deckchairs can be rented and some water sports are offered. Wear water shoes anyway, because the seabed outside the sandy zone is rocky.

Grebišće Beach

Grebišće is about 2 km from town and is made up of two bays. Camp Grebišće sits on the bay, and non-campers can use the beach. It is a 10-minute bike ride from Jelsa on a mostly flat road, so a rented bicycle works better than a taxi.

Zenčišća, Crikvica and Prapatna Bays

These smaller bays lie along the coast east and west of town. They are mostly pebble and rock, with less shade and few facilities. Bring water and an umbrella.

Zečevo Island

Zečevo is a naturist island a short boat ride from Jelsa. Local taxi boats run there in summer. Check the price with the skipper before boarding.

South Coast Beaches: Zavala and Ivan Dolac

The road through the Pitve tunnel leads to the south side of Hvar. Zavala and Ivan Dolac are the main beaches there. Both are pebble beaches with clear water and are less sheltered than the north coast. Going by car is easiest, since buses are infrequent.

04Opinion: Mina Is Not as Quiet as It Sounds

Mina has a reputation as a quiet bay, but it is the main beach in a small town, and in August it is crowded by midday. For a calm swim, go to Grebišće before 10:00 or take the road to the south coast. An apartment near Mina is a better pick for families with children than for couples who want peace.

The shaded path from the Riva is lit and flat, and it is a pleasant walk at sunset.
