01Is Kornati good for teenagers?
Yes, if the teens like water and boats. Kornati National Park covers 89 islands, islets and reefs. It is a nearly treeless, uninhabited archipelago with cliffs that drop straight into the sea. There are no hotels, no roads and no scheduled public ferry into the park. That means no arcades, no shops and little phone signal in many bays. For most teens this is a one-day or one-week boat adventure, not a place for a long land-based stay.
02How to get to Kornati with teens
There are four realistic options.
Organised day tour (€30–65 per person)
Tours leave from Zadar, Murter, Šibenik, Vodice, Biograd and Pakoštane. Most Zadar tours last 9–10 hours and cost €30–58 per person, with park entry and lunch usually included. The Torcida sailboat from Murter returns at 18:00 and costs €65 for adults and €35 for children aged 5–12. Teens aged 13 and over normally pay the adult price. Large boats carry 40–60 people, so expect a crowd at the swim stops.
Small-group RIB tour (from €110 per person)
RIB tours from Zadar combine Dugi Otok, Kornati and snorkeling in about 9 hours. They cover more distance at higher speed, which suits teens who get bored on slow boats. Small-group Kornati trips from Zadar with a maximum of 12 guests also exist and cost more.
Self-drive boat rental from Murter (from €130 per boat)
Moto Sport Murter rents boats for up to 6 people that need no licence, from about €130 for a 9.5-hour day. Licensed RIB rental for up to 12 people starts around €120. Add the park ticket: €45 per boat in season for a boat up to 7 m, or €65 for 7–11 m, when bought online. Buying from a ranger boat inside the park costs about double.
Sailing charter
The Zadar to Kornati loop is about 80 nautical miles over 5 days, with legs of 10–25 NM. A skippered charter adds roughly €180–250 per day to the boat hire. A skipper is the better choice for families with teens unless an adult has real bareboat experience. Wind and narrow channels leave little room for mistakes.
03Best activities for teenagers in Kornati
- Snorkeling and swimming.
- Water clarity is high and the underwater life is rich. Most tours include two or three swim stops.
- Cliff viewpoints.
- The Levrnaka stop includes a short walk to a viewpoint. The outer cliffs, known as crowns, are the park's best-known sight.
- Kayaking and paddleboarding.
- Some operators in Murter and Zadar offer these. Confirm the location when booking, because the open sea between islands is unsuitable for beginners.
- Telašćica Nature Park.
- Many Zadar tours add this park on Dugi Otok. It has steep sea cliffs and a salt lake, Mir, where teens can swim.
- Diving.
- Diving in the park requires a licence from the park: €15 per diver, €7 per accompanying visitor. Unlicensed dives carry a €400 penalty. Choose an organised dive group.
- Driving a boat.
- The licence-free rental is a real draw for 14–17 year olds, with an adult as skipper.
04Where to stay
The islands have no regular accommodation. Murter is the practical base: it is the main departure point, it has beaches and cafés, and it is a short drive from Šibenik and Zadar. Families who want more evening activity should choose Zadar. Its Sea Organ, old town and Foša harbour departures keep teens busier after the boat day. ACI marina Piškera is the main serviced berth for sailing families inside the park. The park ticket for guests is included in the berth fee.
05When to go
May, June, July and September are the best months. July and August are hottest and busiest. Early September has warm sea and fewer boats. Out of season, park entry for small boats drops to €25. Few tours run in the cooler months, so check schedules.
06Park rules that affect families
Park entry is charged per boat, not per person. There are no child or senior discounts. Tickets cannot be cancelled and the date can only be changed once per season. Book entry in advance online at shop.np-kornati.hr.
07Insider tips
- Ask whether the tour includes the park ticket. Most do, so there is no need to buy it separately.
- Choose a departure around 08:00 and bring your own water, reef-safe sunscreen and hats. There is almost no shade on the islands.
- Bring water shoes for rocky entries. Beaches are small and pebbly.
- Download offline maps and bring a power bank for the day. Signal drops in many bays.
- Skip the large 50-passenger boats if your teens get bored easily. The extra €40–70 for a RIB or small-group trip buys more swim stops and less waiting.
