01Best Areas to Stay in Labin
Labin is a hilltop town in eastern Istria, and its accommodation falls into three practical zones. The old town sits on the ridge at about 300 m above sea level. Podšubit is the lower, more everyday part of town below it. Rabac is the seaside resort on the Kvarner Bay, administratively part of the Labin area, about 4–5 km away by road. Where to stay depends on one choice: sleeping among stone houses and galleries, or sleeping next to a pebble beach.
Labin Old Town (Stari Grad): best for atmosphere
The old town is compact. Cobbled lanes, baroque palaces, the Municipal Loggia and Titov trg (the main square) all fall within a 5-minute walk of each other. Accommodation here is small-scale: boutique hotels with 7 to 20 rooms, plus apartments in restored stone houses. Terra Residence stands on the main square and is a small boutique hotel with a strong guest reputation for breakfast and location. La Loggia Hotel sits at the foot of the old town.
Who it suits: couples, culture-focused travellers, anyone visiting outside the beach season, and people who like quiet evenings.
Drawbacks: the streets are steep and cobbled, so wheeled luggage is awkward. Cars are restricted inside the historic core, so check the parking arrangements before booking. There is no beach within walking distance. Rabac is a 10-minute drive or a 45–60 minute downhill walk.
Typical prices: about €100–170 per night for a double in summer, and €70–110 in spring and autumn.
Podšubit and the foot of the old town: best for value and parking
Podšubit is the lower part of Labin, just below the old town walls. It has shops, cafés, a market area and the main road connections. Hotel Peteani and La Loggia are located at the edge of the old town and are the best-known boutique options in this zone. Apartments with private parking are common here, usually €55–95 per night in July and August.
Who it suits: drivers, families who want a kitchen, and travellers who want old-town access without the cobblestones.
Insider tip: apartments at the foot of the hill often offer the same view over Rabac Bay as the old town, for 20–30% less. Ask for a top-floor room facing east.
Rabac: best for beaches and resorts
Rabac was a small fishing village and is now the main resort area of the Labin coast. It has pebble and rock beaches, a harbour promenade and the biggest concentration of hotels. Rabac itself has several sub-areas:
- Harbour and promenade
- the liveliest part, with restaurants, ice cream and evening strolling. Rooms near the harbour can get noise until about midnight in July and August.
- Maslinica peninsula
- wooded and quieter, with Hedera and Mimosa Lido Palace operated by Maslinica Hotels & Resorts.
- Sv. Andrea peninsula
- the location of the Sunny Rabac hotels by Valamar, a short walk from the beach and a few minutes from the centre.
- Girandella and Sanfior side
- the upscale end. Valamar Sanfior Hotel & Casa sits directly on the beach, and Girandella Resort has a Blue Flag beach nearby and many rooms with sea-view balconies.
- Bellevue area
- Valamar Bellevue Resort is the main all-inclusive family choice.
Boutique Hotel Adoral is a 4-star property set slightly back from the busiest streets, with a pool and a very high guest score of 9.5/10.
Who it suits: families, beach holidays, travellers without a car, and anyone wanting a pool plus sea access.
Typical prices: about €90–150 for modern budget rooms in July and August, and €150–300 for 4-star beachfront rooms. Prices drop by 30–50% in May, June and late September.
Opinion: for a first visit of three or more nights in summer, Rabac is the better base, and the old town can be a half-day trip. For a short city-style break of one or two nights, the old town wins easily.
Villas and private holiday homes around Labin
The countryside around Labin has many holiday houses with private pools. Many of them are 5–10 minutes by car from Rabac. Typical rates for pool villas for 6–8 guests are about €130–260 per night in high season, or about €1,300 and up per week. A car is required, since there is no regular public transport to most of these houses.

03When to Book
Book old-town boutique rooms 2–3 months ahead for July and August. They are few in number and sell out first. Rabac resorts release lower rates for stays booked early in the year. The main season runs from mid-June to early September, and shoulder months (May, June, September) have warm sea temperatures with lower prices. Many Rabac hotels close or run reduced services from November to March, while old-town hotels and apartments stay open year-round.
04Getting Between the Old Town and Rabac
The road between the two is about 4–5 km and takes around 10 minutes by car. A taxi costs roughly €10–15 each way. A local bus links the two at limited frequency, so check the timetable the day before, especially on Sundays and in the evening. Walking down on the footpaths takes about 45–60 minutes, and the climb back is demanding in summer heat.
05Local Tips
- Parking in Rabac fills by 10:00 in peak weeks. Hotels with their own car park save time and money.
- Rabac's central beach is crowded. Smaller rocky coves along the peninsula paths are quieter, so bring water shoes.
- Old-town apartments often lack air conditioning in older stone buildings, which stay cool, but check the listing for July.
- In Rabac, a room one street back from the harbour is usually €15–30 cheaper than one on the waterfront and much quieter.
- The old town is lively in summer evenings, but the weekend nightlife is modest. Light sleepers should avoid rooms directly above the main square on event nights.
