01Why Lopud Works for Families

Lopud is the middle island of the three main Elafiti Islands, between Koločep and Šipan. It has no cars on its streets. Jadrolinija's line 831 timetable states that motor vehicles cannot be loaded or unloaded at Lopud. Children can run along the palm-lined harbour promenade without traffic. The walks are short, and the island's main attraction, Šunj Beach, is one of the few sandy beaches in the Dubrovnik area.

One warning: Lopud is quiet. There are no large attractions, water parks or arcades. Families with teenagers who need constant entertainment should treat it as a two-night stay at most.

02Getting to Lopud with Children

Ferry from Dubrovnik

Jadrolinija runs two year-round services that call at Lopud: passenger line 807 and ferry line 831. Both leave from Gruž port. The crossing takes about 45–50 minutes, with a first stop at Koločep. A one-way ticket costs about €5.40 in season and €3.40 off season. Children's fares are lower, and the youngest children usually travel free. Check the timetable the day before, because sailings thin out at the edges of summer.

For a day trip, a ferry around 09:00–10:00 gives a full beach day. Families staying overnight should arrive with fewer bags than they think they need. Luggage moves by electric golf cart or by hand, and the stone lanes have steps.

Strollers and Luggage

The harbour front is flat and paved, so strollers work there. The forest path to Šunj is rougher. A baby carrier is easier than a stroller on that path.

03Family Apartments on Lopud

Lopud has one larger resort-style hotel, a few small hotels, and many private apartments and rooms in the lanes behind the harbour. Apartments suit families better because of the kitchen and the extra space.

Apartments Mihajlovic

This family-run property (Narikla 28) has three units for families:

Villa Aska
sleeps up to 6. It has a private terrace, a large barbecue and an outdoor shower. Prices start from €79 a night.
Apartment Beti
sleeps up to 4. It has one bedroom and a large balcony with sea views.
Apartment Dino
sleeps up to 4. It has one bedroom and a balcony with a view over Lopud bay.

The house sits in a large garden with olive and orange trees, which gives children room to play away from the beach. Availability and current rates should be confirmed directly, as prices rise in July and August.

What to Check Before Booking

Stairs
Many stone houses sit on slopes. Confirm the number of steps from the lane if you travel with a stroller.
Air conditioning
Essential from late June to early September.
Kitchen
Island shops are small and stock basics only. A kitchen helps with early meals for young children.
Distance to the dock
Staying within 5–10 minutes of the harbour makes arrival and departure days easier.

04Best Activities for Kids on Lopud

Šunj Beach

Šunj is the main reason to bring children. The sand is fine, and the water stays shallow for a long way out. This makes it suitable for toddlers and nervous swimmers. Loungers and umbrellas cost €10–15 a day, and a restaurant sits in the woods just behind the beach. There is also a basic playground.

The walk from the village takes 20–30 minutes through forest. Golf cart taxis also run this route. Quoted prices vary from about €3 per person to €8–10 per ride, so agree on the price before boarding. Walk there in the morning while it is cool, and take a cart back if the children are tired.

Village Beaches

The bay beside Lopud village has sandy and pebbly stretches within a few minutes of the harbour. They are good for short swims when the walk to Šunj feels too long. Water shoes help on the pebbly sections.

Fortress and Monastery Ruins

The ruins above the village, including the Kaštio fortress, and the Franciscan monastery give older children something to explore. The climb is short. Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Walking Paths

Easy paths cross the island through pine and olive groves. A circuit that includes Šunj is manageable for children aged six and over. Bring water, because there are few places to buy it between the village and the beach.

Boat and Swim Time

Speedboat tours from Dubrovnik stop at Šunj, and the speedboat trip takes about 35 minutes. Skip the tour if you are already staying on Lopud. You are paying for transport you do not need.

05Local Tips for Families

  • Arrive at Šunj before 11:00 in July and August. The best sand fills with day-trippers from about midday.
  • Eat lunch early at the beach restaurant. Tables fill quickly once the day-trip ferries arrive.
  • The island is quietest in the evening after the last day-trip ferry leaves. This is the best time to walk the promenade with children.
  • Pack sun hats, reef-safe sunscreen and a small first-aid kit. Pharmacy and medical facilities on the island are very limited, and the nearest hospital is in Dubrovnik.
  • Buy ferry tickets at the dock or from the ticket office in Gruž. Arrive 30 minutes before departure in peak season.

06Best Time to Visit

June and September offer warm sea and fewer visitors. July and August are the hottest and busiest months. Facilities at Šunj operate mainly in season, so visits outside it mean fewer beach services.
