01Is Lopud Worth Visiting? The Short Verdict

Lopud is one of three inhabited Elaphiti Islands, about 15 km northwest of Dubrovnik's Gruž port. It has no cars, a small village, a long harbour promenade and the only large sandy beach in the Dubrovnik area. It suits a relaxed day or a few quiet nights. It does not suit travelers who want sights, shopping or nightlife.

02What Is Great About Lopud

Šunj Beach

Šunj is a wide, shallow sandy bay on the south side of the island. The water stays knee-deep for a long way out, which makes it the best choice near Dubrovnik for small children. The walk from the harbour takes 20–30 minutes across the island through pine and Mediterranean scrub. Shade on the sand is limited, so bring an umbrella or hat.

Car-Free Calm

There is no traffic noise. Golf carts and bikes are the only wheels. The village has a waterfront promenade, a few konobas and small shops, and old churches and ruins from the time when Lopud was a wealthy seafaring settlement. A walk up to the Fortress of Sutvrač (Španjola Fort) on the hill above the village gives wide views over the island and the sea.

Cost Compared with Dubrovnik

The public ferry is the cheapest way to get a beach day near the city. A return ticket costs €6.80 in the off-season and €10.80 in the main season (29 May to 27 September in 2026). Children aged 3–12 pay €1.90 per leg, and hand luggage up to 20 kg is free.

03The Downsides

Crowds

Lopud is a popular day trip, and the busiest time is late morning to mid-afternoon in July and August. Day-trippers arrive on the public ferry and on organised Elaphiti boat tours. Šunj is large, but its best spots near the beach bars fill up. After the late ferries leave, the island is much quieter.

Limited Ferry Windows

Line 807 runs from Dubrovnik at 10:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 20:00 on Monday to Saturday in the main season. Sunday times differ, with departures at 09:00, 11:45, 18:15 and 21:00. A morning departure leaves a full beach day before the evening return. Always check the current Jadrolinija timetable, because some stops are skipped on certain sailings.

Prices on the Island

Ferry prices are low, but food and drink on the island follow tourist rates. Beach-bar meals and sunbed rental cost noticeably more than in a Dubrovnik side street. Golf cart rides are charged per cart and vary by season and driver, so agree the price before getting in.

Limited Accommodation and Nightlife

Beds are limited, and the choice is mostly private apartments and a few hotels. Evenings are quiet. Anyone looking for bars and clubs will be bored.

04Who Should Go and Who Should Skip

Go
families with young children, couples wanting a quiet stay, and travelers who want one easy beach day from Dubrovnik.
Skip
travelers with only one day in the region who have not seen Dubrovnik's Old Town, and anyone expecting dramatic cliffs or turquoise coves. Lopud's appeal is calm and sand, not spectacle.

05Ferry or Boat Tour?

The public ferry is the better choice. Most organised Elaphiti cruises make only a short stop on Lopud, often around lunch, and spend much of the day on the water. The ferry gives you several hours at your own pace for about €10.80 return in summer. Most travelers overestimate the all-inclusive boat tour, and the ferry plus a walk to Šunj gives more beach time for a fraction of the price.

06Insider Tips

  • Take the 10:00 ferry from Gruž and walk to Šunj before the golf carts and tour groups arrive.
  • Bring cash for small beach bars and carts, since card use is not guaranteed everywhere.
  • Buy lunch supplies in Dubrovnik before boarding, or eat in the village instead of at the beach.
  • In shoulder season (May and late September), the ferry is cheaper in the off-season months and the beach is far emptier.
  • Check the return times on the Jadrolinija timetable before you go, and never leave the harbour late for the last boat.

07Final Verdict

Lopud is worth a half or full day for the sand, the car-free calm and the price. It is worth an overnight stay only for travelers who want to do very little. Go outside July and August if possible, and treat Šunj as the main reason to visit.
