01Is Medulin Worth Visiting?

Yes, with conditions. Medulin sits on the southern tip of Istria, about 10 km southeast of Pula, roughly 15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus. It is a resort town of around 6,500 residents, built for beach holidays rather than sightseeing. The verdict depends on the season and the kind of trip.

02What Is Great About Medulin

Bijeca: a sandy beach in a pebble region

Most of Istria and Croatia has pebble or rock shoreline. Bijeca is about 1 km of sand with a very gradual, shallow entry, which makes it one of the best choices in the region for toddlers and young children. Nearby Vižula has smaller, stony beaches that are quieter.

Cape Kamenjak on the doorstep

The protected peninsula south of Premantura has about 30 coves and 11 uninhabited islets in the Medulin archipelago. Pedestrians and cyclists enter free. Cars pay €20 per day in peak season (15 June-15 September) and €10 in shoulder weeks, and the 2026 fee window ran from 2 May to 30 September. Check the official Kamenjak site for the 2027 dates before you go.

Roman ruins and cycling

The Vižula peninsula has the remains of a Roman maritime villa, with floor mosaics, and is free to visit. Cycling route 315 follows the coast past beaches and coves. Boat excursions from the harbor start at about €20 per person.

03The Downsides

August crowds

In July and August the main beach area is packed, and families spill onto grass and pavements around the beach. Parking near Bijeca is paid in peak season, usually €1-2 per hour. Peak-season visitors regularly report queues at the Kamenjak gate too.

Cost

Medulin is not a bargain. Reported daily budgets run €70-100 per person for self-catering travelers, €120-200 for mid-range trips, and €250+ for luxury. Hotels such as Park Plaza Belvedere reach €220-400+ per night in peak summer, against €150-280 in shoulder season. Beach extras vary widely, and one August visitor reported €35 for two sunbeds and an umbrella, far above the €5-7 typical elsewhere. Skip hotel-front loungers and bring your own umbrella; the sand is free.

Limited character

Medulin has a harbor promenade, St. Agnes church, ice cream stands and souvenir shops, but no historic old town. Visitors who want stone streets and atmosphere should base themselves in Pula and day-trip here instead.

04Best Time to Visit

May, June and September combine warm sea, lower accommodation prices and thinner crowds. Late September also falls after the Kamenjak vehicle fee ends. Winter suits cyclists and hikers, but the sea is too cold for swimming and many seasonal businesses close.

05Who Should Go and Who Should Skip

Go
families with small children, beach-and-cycling travelers, campers, and anyone using Medulin as a base for Kamenjak.
Skip
travelers seeking nightlife, cultural depth or a quiet August escape.

06Local Tips

  • Walk or cycle into Kamenjak from Premantura to save the €20 car fee. The roads inside are slow and narrow, and parking tracks can scratch cars.
  • A short Kamenjak visit by car is poor value at €20 in peak season. Go for a full day or arrive by bike.
  • Stay between the harbor and Bijeca for walkable access to restaurants and the beach.
  • Private rooms (sobe) at €30-50 per night are the cheapest way to stay in Medulin.
  • Arrive at Bijeca before 10:00 in July and August to get space.
