Public Transportation in Mljet
Public transportation on Mljet island is minimal, focused almost entirely on accessing the National Park. Relying solely on public options restricts island exploration significantly.
- National Park Shuttles
- The Mljet National Park operates seasonal shuttle buses (typically mid-April to mid-October) from the ferry ports of Pomena and Polače to the Great and Small Lakes. Service frequency varies by season. This service is included with the National Park entrance fee.
- Inter-Island Ferries
- Regular ferry lines connect Mljet (Sobra, Polače, Pomena) to Dubrovnik, Korčula, and other islands. These services are for arrival/departure from Mljet, not for internal island travel.
- No Island-Wide Bus System
- There is no regular public bus network connecting the various villages and towns across Mljet, such as Sobra, Saplunara, Babino Polje, or Goveđari, for general tourist use. While the National Park shuttles efficiently serve the main lake areas, relying solely on them for wider island exploration is impractical.
- Car, Scooter, & Bicycle Rentals
- Renting a vehicle is the most effective solution for independent travel on Mljet. Rental agencies operate in major ports like Polače and Pomena. Prices vary by season and vehicle type.
- Taxis
- Taxis are available in limited numbers in key locations but are considerably more expensive than rental options for extensive travel. They are useful for point-to-point transfers when other options are unavailable.
