01Where to Stay in Motovun with Kids

Motovun stands about 277 m above the Mirna River valley. Every accommodation choice comes down to one question: how far is the bed from the car?

Old town apartments vs. apartments below the hill

Old town apartments put restaurants, the main square and the walls within a few minutes on foot. Apartments Galerija Motovun is one example. It is a short walk from the main square, restaurants and a coffee bar, and it lets children aged 0–7 stay free. The drawback is the cobblestones. Streets are steep and uneven, and some stones are missing, so strollers struggle.

Villas and apartments below the hill give families a garden, a pool or room for ball games, plus parking at the door. Many listings around Motovun describe properties with table tennis, badminton or football on site. Villa Fragola, Loggia Motovun and Casa Pino Pina appear among the most popular family-oriented rentals in the area.

The old town sounds like the obvious base, but with a toddler or a stroller it is usually the wrong one. Luggage, groceries and tired children all have to be carried over cobbles. A rental with its own parking and a garden is easier for most families, and the old town is a short drive away.

What to check before booking

Parking
Cars are restricted at the top. A large car park sits north of the town, about a 15-minute uphill walk from the old town, and a shuttle bus also runs.
Kitchen
Truffle pasta starters in the old town start around €24, so a kitchen saves money for a family of four.
Pool fencing and stairs
Ask about both if children are under 6.
Child pricing
Policies differ. Galerija Motovun's free stay ends at age 7.
Air conditioning
Needed in July and August.

02Best Things to Do in Motovun with Children

Walk the city walls

The walls are open from about 10:00 to 19:00 in season and cost about €5 per person. Family tickets are reported to exist, so ask at the tourism office on the main square. Entry is free from November to March. The ticket is often part of a combined Motovun Impressions ticket that can include the church, the loggia and the New Gate tower. The circuit takes 30–45 minutes.

The views over the Mirna Valley are excellent, but some visitors find €5 steep for the part of the wall that is open. Children aged 5–10 usually enjoy it. Under 4, skip the ticket. The town square has views too, and the walls have drops.

Follow the Veli JoĹľe legend

Local legend says giants built the town, and the giant Veli JoĹľe is the best-known figure. Telling the story on the way up turns a hot climb into a game for younger children. Look for the two rings of walls and the 12th-century citadel at the top.

Go truffle hunting

Motovun forest is known for black and white truffles. Guided hunts with trained dogs take about one hour in the woods and are the most popular activity for children. Miro Tartufi and Tartufi Istra are two operators in the area. Expect to pay about €40 per person.

One reviewer found this expensive for 20 minutes of talk plus a 30-minute walk. Ask the operator how long the forest walk lasts before booking. The dogs are the real attraction for children, and a hunt is better with kids than a restaurant truffle tasting. White truffle season runs September to November. Black truffles can be found for more of the year.

Cycle or walk the Parenzana

The Parenzana is a former railway line, now a cycling and walking route. Its gentle gradients make it far easier than the hill streets. Choose short sections and stop in small villages along the way, in line with your children's energy.

03Practical Tips for Families

Shoes
Closed shoes with grip. The cobbles are slippery when wet.
Tickets

Eating
Ask restaurants for fuĹľi (Istrian pasta) without truffle for children. Kitchen apartments let you cook simple meals.
Summer heat
The climb is exposed. Take water and plan walls for the early morning.
