01Which Day Trips Work Best from Nin?
Nin sits on the northern Zadar coast, so the main excursions run in three directions: south to Zadar and the islands, north-east to the Velebit mountains and Pag, and south-east to the Krka and Kornati area. Nin has no train station, and public bus service is limited, so a rental car makes most of these trips far easier. The region's main motorway, the A1, is reached at the Zadar 1 or Zadar 2 junctions, roughly 20 minutes from Nin.
The trips below are ordered by distance, shortest first.
02Zadar: The Easiest Half-Day Trip (17 km)
Zadar is the nearest city and the logical first excursion. Buses connect Nin with Zadar bus station roughly hourly in summer, fares are about €2–3 each way, and the ride takes 25 to 30 minutes. Driving takes about 20 minutes, but central parking is expensive and restricted. Most visitors use the paid lots outside the old town peninsula.
What to Do in Zadar
- Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun
- Both are on the western waterfront promenade (Riva). They are free and open at all hours. Sunset is the best time to go.
- Roman Forum and Church of St. Donatus
- The forum is free to walk through. The 9th-century round church charges an entry fee of around €3–5, and the price varies by season.
- Kalelarga and the Peninsula
- The main pedestrian street runs through the old town. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the full loop.
- Ferry to Ugljan
- Passenger ferries leave from the Zadar harbour. The crossing to Preko on Ugljan takes about 25 minutes, and a foot-passenger ticket costs a few euros. A day on the island suits travellers who want quiet coves instead of city streets.
Local tip: Check the ferry timetable the evening before. The last departure back to Zadar is early on winter weekdays.
03Paklenica National Park: Canyons and Climbing (about 50 km)
Paklenica National Park lies in the southern Velebit range, near Starigrad. The drive from Nin is about 50 minutes via the Adriatic road (D8). The main entrance is at Velika Paklenica, close to Starigrad.
Entry fees depend on the season. The day ticket is cheaper in winter and spring and costs roughly €6–12 in summer. Parking at the entrance costs a few euros. The park is open daily, and summer hours begin early in the morning.
Best Routes for a Single Day
- Velika Paklenica canyon walk
- The path follows the canyon floor, between rock walls that rise several hundred metres. A short return trip takes 2 to 3 hours.
- Manita Peć Cave
- A steeper climb above the canyon, with a guided cave visit. Bring cash for the cave and mountain huts, since card payment is not available everywhere.
- Rock climbing
- Anića Kuk is the best-known wall. Climbers should arrange guides or equipment in Starigrad.
Summer heat in the canyon is considerable. Start before 9:00 and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
04Pag Island: Salt Pans, Lace and Lamb (about 60 km)
Pag is reached by the Pag Bridge near Maslenica, with no ferry needed for the southern route. The drive to Pag town takes roughly one hour. The scenery is bare limestone and open sea, and the landscape is dramatic, though almost treeless.
Highlights of the Pag Trip
- Pag town
- A compact old town built in the 15th century on a planned grid. It is known for bobbin lace and sheep's milk cheese.
- Pag salt pans
- Salt has been produced here for centuries. A salt museum and a small visitor area operate seasonally.
- Paški sir (Pag cheese)
- Local producers sell hard sheep's cheese for roughly €25–40 per kilogram. Buy directly from a family farm or a market stall rather than a shop on the main road.
- Beaches
- Zrće, near Novalja, is a major party beach about 90 km from Nin. A quieter option is the pebble coves around Pag town.
Pag works best as a half-day plus lunch. Zrće is better left for a longer stay, because the drive is long and the beach is crowded in July and August.
05Vransko Lake Nature Park (about 65 km)
Vransko Lake is the largest natural lake in Croatia, near Biograd na Moru. It is a bird-watching and cycling destination, and one of the least crowded nature areas in the region. The drive from Nin takes about one hour.
The main activities are:
- Cycling
- Flat paths run along the lake and canals. Bike rental is available in the park and in nearby Biograd.
- Kamenjak lookout
- A viewpoint above the lake with a wide view over the water and the islands of the Kornati area. The climb is short.
- Bird watching
- The reed beds attract herons and many other water birds, especially in spring and autumn.
The lake combines well with a lunch stop in Biograd, a small harbour town with a long promenade.
06Krka National Park: The Best Waterfall Trip (about 105 km)
Krka is the strongest nature excursion from Nin, and the trip is practical in a single day. Drive to Skradin (about 1 hour 15 minutes) and take the park boat to Skradinski Buk, the largest waterfall system in the park. Roški Slap is a quieter second entrance, but the drive is longer.
Entry prices change sharply by season. Low-season tickets cost roughly €7, shoulder months about €20 and peak summer up to €40. Check the official park price list before travelling.
Practical Details for Krka
- Swimming
- Swimming below the main falls has been banned for years. Do not rely on photos that show people in the water.
- Best time
- Arrive before 10:00 or after 15:00 in summer. Some seasons offer a cheaper afternoon ticket.
- Pair it with Å ibenik
- The old town and the Cathedral of St. James (UNESCO) are about 15 minutes from Skradin by car.
Krka is also the better value compared with Plitvice. It is closer, can be combined with a coastal town, and offers a boat ride and food on site.
07Plitvice Lakes: Possible, but a Very Long Day (about 190 km)
Plitvice Lakes is Croatia's best-known national park, with 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls. From Nin the drive is about 2 hours 20 minutes each way via the A1 and the Lika road. Guided tours from Zadar take about 10 hours and typically cost €50–90, plus park entry if not included.
Opening hours and prices vary by season. A summer adult ticket costs about €40, and the autumn and winter prices are much lower. Book timed entry online for July and August.
The marketing makes a Plitvice day trip from the coast look easy, but it is not. Nin to Plitvice and back is more than four and a half hours behind the wheel, and tour buses reach the park at the same time as every other group. A night near the park, or a visit in May or October, makes a much better experience than a rushed summer day. Visitors with only one day to spare should choose Krka.
Be cautious with street-side tour sellers in Zadar. Reviews of some operators mention extra cash charges on the day that raise the final price well above the advertised amount. Confirm in writing whether the park ticket is included.
08Other Options Worth Considering
- Kornati Islands boat trip
- Day cruises depart from Murter and Biograd and run from about €60–90 per person depending on lunch. The islands are a national park, and a separate entry fee is usually added.
- Novigrad Sea and Maslenica
- The Maslenica Bridge viewpoint and the inland sea around Novigrad are a short stop on the way to Paklenica or Pag.
- Zaton and Posedarje coast
- Pebble beaches and restaurants close to the A1 are an easy afternoon stop on the return from Zadar.

10Insider Tips for Day Trips from Nin
- Fuel up before leaving. Prices are usually lower on the A1 motorway area near Zadar than in small coastal villages.
- Motorway tolls on the A1 are charged by distance, and cards are accepted at the booths. Budget roughly €5–15 each way for Krka or Plitvice.
- The bura, a cold north-east wind, sometimes closes the Pag Bridge and the A1 to high-sided vehicles in winter. Check road reports before leaving.
- In July and August, leave Nin before 8:00 to avoid queues at park gates.
- Carry some cash. Cave tickets, mountain huts and small farm shops often do not take cards.
