01Is Novigrad Worth Visiting?

Novigrad (Cittanova) is a small fishing and tourist town on the west coast of Istria. It sits on a limestone peninsula at the mouth of the Mirna River, about 16 km from Umag and 17 km from Poreč. It suits travellers who value calm and food over sightseeing. It does not suit anyone who needs a long list of attractions.

02What Is Good About Novigrad

A compact, uncrowded old town

The old town can be walked in under an hour. The Venetian-era walls end at a sea-facing loggia, which is the only one by the sea in Istria. The Mandrač harbour, lined with pastel houses, is the best place for an evening walk.

Small but real culture

The Lapidarium Museum, in a former cinema, holds Roman to medieval stone monuments. Its best-known piece is the 8th-century Ciborium of Bishop Mauricius. Entry is around €5. Hours are seasonal, typically 10:00–18:00 in summer and shorter off-season, and it is closed on Mondays, so check before you go.

The parish church of St Pelagius and St Maximus has the only early Romanesque crypt in Istria. The town also has the Gallerion museum of the Austro-Hungarian Navy and the Rigo Gallery.

Seafood

Novigrad is known for its scallops (kapešante), mussels and oysters. Čok and Damir & Ornella have both been Michelin-recommended. Čok is known for steamed sea bass, and Damir & Ornella for a raw-fish-based menu. Amfora is a tavern for cuttlefish and truffle pasta. Wine bar Rigo pours about 30 wines by the glass.

03What Is Not Great

Beaches
Karpinjan Beach is family-friendly but the coast is mostly pebble and concrete platforms. Anyone expecting Dalmatian coves will be disappointed.
Limited sights
Most visitors need half a day for the sights. Beyond that, Novigrad works as a base for Poreč, Rovinj, Motovun and Umag.
Nightlife
Limited to a few bars and the occasional live music event. People who want clubs go elsewhere.
Restaurant prices
Not cheap. Menus are not at the budget end of Istria.

04Crowds and Seasons

Novigrad is far quieter than Rovinj or Poreč, but July and August still bring crowds, higher prices and difficult parking. May, June and September are the best months. The mild weather suits walking, and the sea is warm enough for swimming from June.

05Costs in 2027

Hotels
Typically €70–95 for budget options and €110–170 for central boutique hotels. Peak-season prices run well above the off-season average.
Parking
The large paid lot by the marina is the easy choice. Near-Old-Town lots reach about €2.50 per hour in peak season, with daily caps of €12–25. Outer lots are cheaper.
Day budget
A one-day visit with parking, a seafood lunch and a museum comes to roughly €50–60 per person.

Paying €25 a day to park beside the Old Town gate is poor value. Use the 800 m outer lot and walk. The town is flat and small.

06Insider Tips

  • Walk the walls to the loggia at sunset, then eat away from the harbour front, where prices tend to be higher.
  • Visit the Mirna River mouth for birdwatching if you have a spare half day.
  • Water park Istralandia is a short drive away and suits families with children, but it is a summer-only extra.

07Who Should Skip It

Anyone short on time who can only visit one Istrian town should choose Rovinj for scenery, despite the crowds. Novigrad's strength is calm, not spectacle. It is a good fit for couples, food-focused travellers and families who want a quiet base.
