01Is Paklenica Good for Toddlers and Young Children?
Yes, with limits. Paklenica National Park sits on the southern slopes of the Velebit range, and its two gorges, Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica, have cliffs of more than 400 m. Only the lower part of Velika Paklenica suits small children. The coast below the park is a better base for toddlers than the park itself: Starigrad-Paklenica has shallow pebble beaches, flat waterfront paths and many apartments with kitchens.
The park has over 150 km of trails, but families with children under 6 will use only a small fraction of them.
02National Park Tickets and Child Prices
Children aged 0-6 accompanied by adults receive a free single-entry pass. Ages 7-18 pay a reduced fee. The 2026 one-day rates were as follows:
- May-September: €9.50 adult, €4.75 child (7-18)
- March-April and October: about €6 adult, about €3.80 child (online price)
- Winter (January-February, November-December): about €4 adult, €2.38 child
A 5% discount applies to tickets bought in the Parks of Croatia web shop. Check the park's price list before travelling, because prices can change. The park is open from about 6:00 to 20:30 in summer; hours are shorter in winter.
03Best Easy Walks for Toddlers
Paklarić Educational Trail (550 m)
This is the best first walk for small children. It starts at the restored Paklenica mill, about 150 m from Entrance 1, and climbs 550 m to the remains of the Paklarić fortress and a viewpoint at 121 m. Allow 45-60 minutes with a toddler. The path is a footpath, not stroller-friendly. Use a carrier for children under 2.
Lower Velika Paklenica Canyon Path
A road about 2 km long runs from the entrance to the end of the paved section, where the main canyon path begins. The path is wide and has a gentle gradient. Walking 1-2 km in and returning gives children the canyon walls and the stream without a long commitment. Rocks on the path are slippery, so closed shoes matter.
The trail to the Paklenica Mountain Lodge takes 4-4.5 hours round trip. This is too long for children under 5 or 6, even in a carrier, because there is little shade on the return.
What to Skip
Mala Paklenica is not suited to families with small children, and the passage may be impassable after heavy rain. Cycling is not permitted on park trails.
04Rainy-Day Option: Underground Secrets of Paklenica
The visitor center is built in former wartime bunkers near the park entrance. It has interactive exhibits on geology, wildlife and climbing history, plus a small climbing area. It is a sensible 1-1.5 hour stop for children aged 3 and up, and it is cool on hot days.
05Beaches in Starigrad for Small Children
Beaches here are pebble, not sand. Bring water shoes for toddlers.
- Starigrad Paklenica beach
- about 300 m long, with shallow water, showers, changing cabins, WC and natural shade. It is 0.7 km from the town centre.
- Jaz beach
- the central town beach with a gentle sea entry and cafés close by.
- Većka Kula
- a sand-and-gravel beach with natural shade, below medieval tower ruins.
- Plantaža
- a concrete and gravel beach that suits families with children.
The water deepens slowly at most of these spots, but there is no lifeguard on most beaches. Keep toddlers within arm's reach.
06Sample Day With a Toddler
- 8:00: Arrive at Entrance 1 early. Parking fills by mid-morning in July and August.
- 8:30-10:00: Paklarić trail and a short stretch of the canyon path.
- 10:30: Optional visitor center stop.
- 12:00: Lunch and nap in the apartment.
- 16:30-19:00: Beach, then the waterfront path in Starigrad (about 2.4 km loop).
07Where to Stay
Starigrad-Paklenica and neighbouring Seline are the practical bases. Choose a private apartment or holiday home with a kitchen, a terrace and air conditioning. Staying within walking distance of the beach removes the daily car-seat shuffle. Zadar airport is roughly 45-50 km away, and the drive along the coast takes about 45 minutes.
08Insider Tips
- Start at 8:00 in summer. By 11:00 the canyon floor is hot and the exposed sections have little shade.
- Bring your own water and snacks. Services inside the canyon are limited to a mountain lodge far from the entrance.
- Pack a baby carrier, not a stroller, for any park trail.
- Avoid mid-afternoon on the beach in July and August; the pebbles get very hot for bare feet.
- The 3- and 5-day park tickets are not worth buying for a toddler family. Short walks use one day at most, and under-7s are free anyway.
09Best Time to Visit
Late May, June and September give warm sea water and cooler mornings for walking. July and August are hot, with canyon walls that hold heat. October is quiet and cheaper, but the sea is cooler and some beach facilities close.
10Who Should Choose Another Destination
Families wanting sandy beaches, water parks or playground-heavy resorts will find Starigrad quiet. It suits parents who like short nature walks and calm beaches.
