01Which Paklenica Spots Do Most Visitors Miss?

Most visitors head straight to the main Velika Paklenica canyon path and the Manita peć cave. That leaves five places with almost no crowds: Marasovići hamlet, Mala Paklenica, the Ivine Vodice shelter, St Peter's Church and Modrić Cave. All can be combined with a base in Starigrad-Paklenica, about 45 km northeast of Zadar.

02Marasovići: The Stone Hamlet at the Park Gate

Marasovići sits directly in front of the Velika Paklenica entrance and is a protected cultural monument. Most of the village is almost abandoned, and its dry-stone houses show the stonemasonry tradition of the Podvelebit region. The park institution restored one old house as the Ethno-house Marasović. It hosts an exhibition on mirila, the carved stone markers used in traditional burials in the area. The exhibition is open mainly in summer, so confirm hours at the park visitor centre.

Insider tip: Walk through the hamlet before 9:00 or after 17:00. Tour groups pass through the gate in the middle of the day and rarely stop here.

03Mala Paklenica: The Quieter Canyon

Mala Paklenica has its own entrance (Entrance 2) and sees far fewer hikers than its larger neighbour. The gorge is narrower and wilder, with no hut at the start and little signage. Check conditions at the park office first, as the route can be wet after rain. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, since there are no cafés on the trail.

04Ivine Vodice: A Night in the High Country

The Ivine Vodice shelter stands at 1,200 m and takes about 12 people. There is a spring close by. The walk from the Paklenica Mountain Hut takes around 2.5 hours. It also works as a base for Vaganski vrh (1,757 m), the highest peak of the Velebit range, and Sveto brdo (1,753 m).

Doing Ivine Vodice as a single day hike from sea level is a mistake. The loop runs more than 30 km with a climb of roughly 2,000 m, and most hikers end up descending in the dark. Sleep at a shelter instead, and carry food, a sleeping bag and water treatment, because there is no staffed service.

05St Peter's Church Near Seline

This medieval church stands beside the old Adriatic road between Starigrad and Seline. A graveyard from the mid-13th century lies close by. It takes 15 minutes, costs nothing, and is a useful stop when cycling the coastal road.

06Modrić Cave Near Rovanjska

Modrić Cave lies about 15 km south of Starigrad. It is easy to reach by car and is an alternative to the long climb to Manita peć, which takes about 1.5 hours uphill from the Velika Paklenica car park. Entry is by guided visit, so ask locally for current times and prices.

07Practical Tips

Best months
April-June and late September-October. Summer heat in the canyons often exceeds 30 °C.
Park fees
A one-day adult ticket costs around €10 in peak season, and less in spring, autumn and winter. Multi-day tickets cost less per day.
Getting around
A car or bike makes the coastal sites easy. Bus links from Zadar run to Starigrad, but not to the hamlets and shelters.
Caves
About 115 caves have been surveyed in the park, but Manita peć is the only one open to visitors without special permission. Do not enter others.
