01When Is the Best Time to Visit Podgora?
Podgora is a small beach town on the Makarska Riviera, about 9 km northwest of Makarska and roughly 40 km southeast of Omiš, with the Biokovo range rising directly behind it. It is a swimming destination first. The best window therefore depends on sea warmth, and the sea stays swimmable far longer than most visitors expect.
The verdict is two windows: late May to mid-June and September. Both give warm water, long days and open services without peak-season pricing.
02The Balance: Weather vs Crowds vs Price
| Priority | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Warmest sea and guaranteed beach days | Late June to mid-September |
| Best overall value | September |
| Lowest prices with decent weather | Mid-May to early June |
| Hiking on Biokovo | May, June, September, October |
| Quiet, off-season stay | November to March (limited services) |
Why September Wins
The Adriatic peaks at about 24–26°C and holds that warmth through September, often feeling warmer than early summer. Hotel prices fall around 30–50% from August levels. Crowds thin sharply once European school holidays end, around the second week of September. Air temperatures stay comfortable for walking the waterfront promenade and for day trips.
The swimming season in Podgora runs from June to October, and the sea rarely drops below 20°C in those months. Even in early December, the water has been measured at about 18°C, though cool air makes that unappealing for most people.
Why Late May to Mid-June Is the Runner-Up
Daytime highs sit in the low-to-mid 20s°C, and accommodation can run around 35–45% below August prices. The trade-off is the sea: roughly 20–23°C feels fresh, and some travelers will find it too cool for long swims. Showers are more likely than in July. Choose this window for hiking, cycling and sightseeing, with swimming as a bonus.
What July and August Offer
August is the hottest month, with highs around 29°C and sea temperatures averaging about 25°C. July is the sunniest month at roughly 11.7 hours of sunshine per day. Occupancy and prices are at their highest, and Podgora's pebble beaches fill by mid-morning. Peak season suits families tied to school calendars and anyone who wants the most reliable heat. It is the weakest value.
03Don't Believe the "Summer Only" Advice
Some travel pages advise visiting only from June to September. That undersells the town. September is better than July for most people: the sea is as warm, queues are shorter and rooms are cheaper. Booking July by default is the most common and most expensive mistake here.
04Winter and Late Autumn: Who It Suits
October to December is the rainy season, and November is the wettest month, with about 1,500 mm of rain falling across the year. Many cafés, rental operators and boat services reduce hours or close. Winter works for a quiet stay, mountain walks and low prices, but not for a beach holiday. Early October is the exception, with a still-warm sea and a calm town.
05Practical Tips for Choosing Your Dates
- Book the second week of September onward for the sharpest drop in crowds while the sea stays warm.
- Check that your chosen activities are running. In May and October, boat trips, diving centres and water sports operate on reduced schedules. Scuba diving and water sports are available from local operators in season.
- Pick accommodation within a few minutes' walk of the sea. The town stretches along the coast, and a seafront location saves a steep climb back from the beach in hot weather.
- Use Podgora as a base. Makarska has more restaurants and nightlife. Ferries from Drvenik to Sućuraj on Hvar and day trips to Brač from Makarska work best in June and September, when departures are frequent and sold-out risks are lower.
- Expect the bora and jugo winds. A strong southerly jugo brings rain and rougher sea, mostly in autumn and winter. A cooling summer breeze is common in the afternoon.
- Reserve early for July and August. Waterfront apartments book out months ahead. September and late May rooms can often still be found a few weeks before arrival.
06Who Should Go When
- Couples and independent travelers
- September or late May.
- Families with school-age children
- July and August are the only option, so book early and stay near the beach.
- Hikers and cyclists
- May, June, late September and October.
- Budget travelers
- Mid-May to mid-June, or the last two weeks of September.
- Swimmers who feel the cold
- Late June to late September.
The warm-water mid-September window is the best answer for most travelers. The sea is as warm as it gets, the town is calmer, and rooms cost noticeably less. In 2027, plan around it unless school dates rule it out.
