01Where to Stay in Podgora with a Toddler

Podgora is a town of about 2,500 residents on the Makarska Riviera, between the sea and the Biokovo mountain range. It is quiet, compact and calmer than Makarska, which makes it easier with a stroller and a nap schedule.

Hotel: Medora Auri Family Beach Resort

Medora Auri is a 4-star beachfront hotel with 253 rooms and suites on Tina Ujevića street. The hotel sits on a promenade closed to cars, so children can walk to the beach without traffic. It has two heated outdoor pools, including a children's splash area, plus indoor playrooms with age-based programmes and outdoor playgrounds. Breakfast is usually included. For families who want pools, kids' activities and the beach in one place, this is the default choice.

Campsite: Medora Orbis

Medora Orbis Camping and Glamping is a family-friendly site south of the centre, next to Sutikla beach. It has a playground, a shared barbecue area and bike hire. Tent pitches start from about €46.70 per night for two adults, plus taxes. Ferry ports for Brač are about 15 minutes away by car and for Hvar about 20 minutes.

Private apartments

Apartments and holiday houses are the cheapest option for families of three or more. Check three things before booking: air conditioning in the bedrooms, a flat route from the door to the sea (the town climbs steeply uphill from the shore), and a balcony large enough for a travel cot.

02Best Beaches for Toddlers in Podgora

All beaches here are pebble, so bring water shoes for children from the first steps onward.

Podgora town beach and Medora beach
Central, with showers, toilets and restaurants within a short walk. The most convenient for nap breaks.
Sutikla
A narrow pebble beach with natural pine shade and an easy, gradual entry into the sea. Bars and restaurants are close, so snacks and changing facilities are never far.
Garma
A cove on the northern edge of town with gravel, small rocks and pine trees. The sea entry is gradual and the beach is quieter than the centre. It has fewer facilities, so bring water and food.
Plišivac
A bay more than 1 km long, partly narrow, and often named among the best beaches in the area. Allow extra time for walking with young children.
Čaklje
Pebbles, clear water and partial pine shade just south. It fills up in July and August.

For a sandy-feeling entry, drive about 15 km north to Punta Rata in Brela, where tiny gravel gives way to a shallow, sandy entrance.

03Things to Do with Young Children

Playground
The playground with swings, slides and carousels is on Don Mihovil Pavlinović Square, about 800 m from Medora Auri.
Toy train
A tourist train circles the town in summer and works well as a stroller-free outing.
Seagull Wings monument (Galebova krila)
A short walk uphill from town. Go early in the morning in summer, and carry toddlers on the steep sections.
Evening promenade
Restaurants along the waterfront serve pasta, pizza and grilled fish. Eating at 18:00 avoids queues and heat.
Malacological Museum in Makarska
A shell museum, roughly 9 km from the beach, that suits children and is a good rainy-day option.

04Day Trips: What Works and What Does Not

Makarska (about 9 km) has a long seafront promenade and an easy half-day. Tučepi has a 4 km pebble beach with a long promenade of shops and restaurants. Both are short drives or local bus rides.

Boat trips to Brač (including Zlatni Rat) and Hvar run from the area. With a toddler under three, skip the full-day Hvar excursion. The boat time, heat and lack of shade cost more in tantrums than the views repay, and a second day at Garma or Sutikla is the better use of the money. Brač by car ferry with a flexible schedule is the gentler option.

05Practical Tips for Toddlers

Season
June and September give warm sea and lower crowds. July and August are hot and busy, especially at Čaklje.
Shade
Choose pine-covered beaches (Sutikla, Garma, Čaklje) from 11:00 to 16:00. Bring a pop-up UV tent for the town beach.
Car seats
A rental car is helpful for Brela, Makarska and the ferries. Bring your own car seats or reserve them with the rental company in advance.
Strollers
The seafront is flat, but side streets are steep. A lightweight stroller or carrier handles the town better than a heavy one.
Local tip
Beaches fill with day-trippers by 10:30 in peak season. Arrive before 09:30 for a shaded spot, and head back for lunch and a nap.
Pharmacy and doctor
Makarska is the nearest town with a hospital and larger pharmacies. Pack child fever medicine and sun cream, because tourist-area prices are higher.

06Getting There

The nearest airports are Split (roughly 80 km, about one hour by road) and Dubrovnik (roughly 170 km, 2.5 to 3 hours). Many families arrange a private transfer, since a taxi or transfer avoids luggage and car seat changes with a tired child. Plan a break halfway if driving from Dubrovnik.
