01Which Rabac Beach Is Best?
Rabac has no sand. Every beach is pebble or rock, and the sea is clear and calm. Four beaches matter for most visitors: Maslinica, Girandella, Lanterna and Sveti Andrea. Rabac is a small resort on the east coast of Istria, below the hill town of Labin. A coastal promenade, the Lungomare, links the main bays on foot.
Maslinica Beach: Best for Facilities
Maslinica is one of the largest beaches in Rabac. It is about 500 m long and lies west of the town centre. The beach has a Blue Flag for water quality and facilities. Pedal boats, slides, a bouncy castle, a sailing school, table tennis and mini golf are all on site. Cafés, snack bars and shops are a few steps away.
Natural shade is almost nonexistent, so plan to rent an umbrella and sunbeds. Hotels and a campsite sit behind the beach. It is a public beach, not just for hotel guests.
Girandella Beach: Best for Clear Water and Families
Girandella is a smaller pebble beach, partly surrounded by rocks, with a Blue Flag. The sea is clear and slopes gently, which makes it good for children. It lies below the Girandella resort, about 1.4 km from the town centre. It is also one of the most crowded beaches in July and August.
Lanterna Beach: Best for Easy Entry
Lanterna has an easy sea entry, and it is the better pick for young children who are not confident in the water. Rocky sections nearby suit swimmers who want deeper water. It is reached along the Lungomare.
Sveti Andrea and the Smaller Coves
Sveti Andrea and the small bays along the path are quieter than Maslinica and Girandella. Water shoes are useful on every Rabac beach, because the pebbles are coarse and the rocky entries are slippery.
02Rabac Beach Comparison
Maslinica suits families who want activities and food next to the beach. Girandella is better for calm swimming and a resort feel. Lanterna and Sveti Andrea suit people who prefer quiet and are happy to walk. Peak crowds run from July to August, and Girandella and Maslinica fill first.
03Beachfront Apartments in Rabac
True beachfront stock is limited, because much of the waterfront belongs to hotels. Most apartments are on the hillside streets above the harbour and the Lungomare. Many of these have sea views, a balcony and air conditioning, and are 3–10 minutes on foot from the water.
Typical Prices
- Studios with a sea view: about €70 per night.
- Two-person apartments (35 m²): about €90 per night.
- Four-person apartments (55 m²): about €110 per night.
- Larger beachfront or four-bedroom sea-view apartments: €150 or more per night in summer.
Prices are lower in May, June and September. Some operators run early-booking discounts of about 10% for summer stays.
Named Options
Sunset Apartments Rabac is less than 1 km from Maslinica and has a balcony, air conditioning and free private parking. VILLAMAR beachfront apartments offer free private parking at a higher price point. Apartments Supra Mare and Apartments Mare Losinjska 16 are other sea-side options in town, and the latter suits families.
Where to Base Yourself
- Harbour and centre
- restaurants and the evening promenade are on your doorstep. Streets are steep, and the nearest big beach is a walk away.
- Maslinica side
- flat access to the longest beach and its facilities, but it is quieter at night.
- Girandella side
- the clearest water and a resort setting, but it is 1.4 km from the centre, so expect a walk back uphill.
04Local Tips for Rabac Beaches
- Arrive before 10:00 in July and August to get a spot on Maslinica or Girandella. After 11:00 the best places are taken.
- Walk the Lungomare to reach the smaller bays. It is a promenade, and it continues toward Labin.
- Book sea-view apartments by February for August. Parking is limited in the centre, so choose a listing with private parking.
- A balcony is more useful than a pool here. The beaches are close, and most apartment pools are small.
- Pack water shoes. This is the most useful item for Rabac's pebble and rock entries.
05Opinion: Skip the Centre for a Beach Stay
Booking an apartment right on the harbour for a beach holiday is a mistake. It looks convenient on the map, but the harbour is not a swimming spot, and the real beaches are a walk away. Stay on the Maslinica or Girandella side and walk into town in the evening.
06Getting There
Rabac is about 47 km from Pula. Labin is a short drive up the hill, and the Lungomare also reaches it on foot, though the climb is steep. A car makes the smaller coves and day trips easier.
