01Which Area of Ston Is Best to Stay In?

The Ston municipality is small, so the choice comes down to four bases. Mali Ston is the best for most visitors because it has the sea, the oyster restaurants and the start of the walls in one place. Ston town is quieter and cheaper. Prapratno is for beach days and the Mljet ferry. Hodilje, Broce and Luka are for people with a car who want a villa or a view.

The two towns are about 1 km apart. Ston sits on the Pelješac isthmus, roughly 55 km northwest of Dubrovnik by road, and Mali Ston is on the Mali Ston Bay side. The bay is the source of the area's oysters and mussels.

02Mali Ston: Best Overall Base

Mali Ston is a small harbour village with a short waterfront, a pebble beach and a few restaurants. The land wall that climbs toward Ston begins at the edge of the village. Most visitors on a food trip want to be here.

Who it suits: couples, food-focused travellers, and anyone who wants to walk to dinner and back.

Hotels and stays:

  • Hotel Ostrea is a small three-star hotel on the waterfront, about 100 m from the old town entrance and right beside the beach. Guests rate it around 9.2/10. It has a restaurant and bar, and summer rooms typically start around €150-200 a night.
  • Villa Koruna is a beachfront hotel with a well-known seafood restaurant. It is a good second option if Ostrea is full.
  • Apartments Marita is a few steps from the beach and works for short stays. Expect roughly €70-110 a night in summer.
  • Several holiday homes and rooms sit on the slope above the harbour. Some of these require climbing steps, so check before booking with luggage.

Downsides: Mali Ston is tiny and has few shops. It fills at lunchtime with day-trippers and tour groups, then empties after about 17:00. Parking in the village is limited, so ask your host about it.

03Ston Town: Best for Budget and Quiet Evenings

Ston town is a walled settlement with a grid of stone streets, a main square, a bakery, small shops and a pharmacy. It has more apartments than Mali Ston, and they are usually cheaper. Summer prices for a two-person apartment are typically €60-100 a night.

Who it suits: budget travellers, longer stays, and anyone who prefers a town with everyday services. The old town is also close to the salt pans, which are worth a visit.

Examples:

House Ina Ston
is in the old town next to the walls.
Apartman Matić
is a 4-minute walk from the walls and about 1.6 km from Mali Ston beach.
Sorgo Palace
is a bed and breakfast with rooms and apartments in a historic building.

Downsides: Ston has no real beach. You walk or drive about 1 km to Mali Ston, or about 4 km to Prapratno. The town is quiet at night, with only a few restaurants staying open late.

04Prapratno: Best for Beaches and Mljet

Prapratno is a bay about 4 km south of Ston. It has one of the few sandy beaches on the peninsula, a pine-shaded shore and a ferry port with sailings to Sobra on Mljet.

Who it suits: families, campers, and travellers catching the early Mljet ferry. Autocamp Prapratno sits directly on the beach, and there are a few private rooms nearby, such as Jago's Rooms.

Downsides: Dinner options are limited to the beach bars and a handful of restaurants. You need a car, or you must rely on taxis, for Ston and Mali Ston. In August the beach is crowded and the access road backs up when the ferry is loading.

05Hodilje, Broce, Luka and Duba Stonska: Best for Villas

The scattered hamlets around Ston are mostly villas and apartments with private parking and sea views. They have fewer than a dozen listings each, apart from Hodilje, which has more.

Hodilje
is a few kilometres from Ston and has some of the area's newer villas with pools. Villa Menalo is one of them.
Broce
and Luka are inland villages in the hills. Expect quiet nights and a car-dependent stay.
Duba Stonska
is on the south coast, with small pebble coves.

A villa with a pool in this part of the peninsula typically costs €200-400 a night in July and August. Off-season rates drop by roughly a third to a half.

07When to Book and What It Costs

Summer is the busiest season. July and August prices are the highest, and the small hotels fill quickly. Book Hotel Ostrea and Villa Koruna several months ahead for that period.

A rough guide for two people per night:

Budget room or apartment in Ston town
€50-100 in summer, €35-60 in spring and autumn.
Mid-range apartment in Mali Ston
€70-120 in summer.
Hotel on the Mali Ston waterfront
€120-200 in summer, often less in spring and autumn.
Villa with a pool
€200-400 in summer.

Prices vary by date, so treat these as ranges, not fixed rates.

08Local Tips for Choosing Where to Stay

  • The best-value choice is an apartment in Ston town. Mali Ston is a 15-minute walk away, and you pay noticeably less than on the waterfront.
  • Book Mali Ston if you plan to walk the walls. The wall is about 5.5 km long between the two towns, with a steep climb. Starting from Mali Ston at opening time puts you on the wall before the day-trip coaches arrive. Bring water and wear shoes with grip.
  • Check access before you book a hillside house. Several Mali Ston rooms are up stairs, and some narrow lanes do not allow cars to reach the door.
  • Stay in Mali Ston for the oyster season. The Day of St Joseph on 19 March is the area's main oyster-and-food event. Rooms are scarce around it.
  • Staying for the Mljet ferry: Prapratno removes the morning drive and the queue risk. It is worth it in July and August.
  • Ask about air conditioning. Stone buildings stay cool, but not all budget rooms have it, and July nights can be warm.

Mali Ston and Ston are connected by a flat road of about 1 km, plus the walls path. The two can be walked in about 15 minutes. Ston has a bus stop on the main road for Dubrovnik services. Outside the two towns, a car is the practical option, since public transport on the peninsula is limited.
