01Where to Stay in Supetar: Neighbourhoods at a Glance

Supetar is the main port town on the north coast of Brač, about 50 minutes by car ferry from Split. The town is compact. Most of it can be crossed on foot in 20 minutes, so the choice of area depends less on distance and more on noise, beach type and whether a car is involved. There are four practical areas: the harbour and old centre, Banj, the Vela Luka peninsula, and Mirca.

02Harbour and Old Centre: Best for First-Time Visitors

The waterfront promenade holds most of the restaurants, bakeries, cafés and the ferry terminal. Hotel Osam sits directly on the promenade, and Grand Hotel View is a short walk away. Villa Supetar is in the middle of town, about 70m from a pebble beach.

Pros: Walk to everything, no car required, easy arrival by Jadrolinija ferry or catamaran from Split, and a lively evening atmosphere. Local buses to other parts of the island leave from the bus stop beside the port.

Cons: Summer evenings bring noise from terrace bars and music, and rooms facing the promenade are the loudest. The town beach by the port, Acapulco, is pebbly and gets crowded.

Insider tip: Ask for a room on the back or upper floor. The ferry horn is audible on the front rows, and early departures start around 5:00.

A rental apartment in the old streets behind the church of the Annunciation usually costs less than a hotel on the front, often €70–€110 for two people in July and August. It also gives a kitchen and a quieter night.

03Banj: Best for a Quiet Base Near a Beach

Banj is the residential area on the western side of Supetar Bay, a 10–15 minute walk from the ferry port. Banj Beach is pebbly at the water's edge and turns sandy a few metres out, which makes it comfortable for swimming without water shoes. Hotel Villa Adriatica, an adults-only 4-star family-run property, is about 100m from the beach. Many family apartments in the area are 2–5 minutes' walk from the sand.

Pros: Calmer at night than the harbour, a good view across the bay, and the best mix of price and beach access in town. The walk to restaurants takes about 10–15 minutes along the coast path.

Cons: Fewer restaurants within the immediate neighbourhood, and evenings involve a walk back uphill if the apartment is set back from the sea.

For most couples and families without a rental car, Banj is the best balance in Supetar. It is quieter than the centre but still walkable to everything.

04Vela Luka Peninsula: Best for Families and Resorts

The peninsula north of the harbour holds the main resort zone along Put Vele Luke. Vela Luka Beach is a sandy cove with shallow water, and it is the best beach in town for small children. The peninsula also has Tri Bridges Beach, a pebbly beach by the Waterman hotels. Aminess Vival Velaris Resort and Waterman Svpetrvs Resort (all inclusive) are located here, set among pine trees. The walk to the centre is about 15–20 minutes, or about 1.5km.

Pros: Pools, kids' programmes, tennis courts and spa facilities on site. Half-board and all-inclusive packages remove the need to find restaurants. Vela Luka's villas and holiday homes with private pools are also concentrated nearby.

Cons: The area is quiet after dark, and evenings away from the resort mean a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride. The all-inclusive option is usually not worth the extra cost if the plan is to eat in town and take day trips, since Supetar's konobas are affordable and varied.

Insider tip: The pine-shaded walking path around the peninsula is the best free evening activity in town, and it links Vela Luka to the harbour without using the main road.

05Mirca: Best for Villas and Drivers

Mirca is a small village about 2–3km east of the centre, with its own pebble coves. It is mostly villas and private apartments, some directly on the water. A walk to Supetar takes 30–40 minutes. This suits groups renting a car or travelling with a private pool booking. It does not suit anyone relying on public transport at night.

Large beachfront villas with private pools are priced for groups. Expect several hundred euros per night in high season.

07Prices and Seasons

Supetar has a strong seasonal swing. In July and August, a standard double in a mid-range hotel costs about €130–€220 per night, while private apartments for two cost about €70–€130. In May, June and September, prices are often 25–40% lower. From November to March, many hotels close or run limited service, and apartments are cheaper but the restaurant choice drops sharply. Tourist tax, usually €1.50–€2.00 per person per night, is normally paid on top of the room price. All prices are indicative and change with the date.

08Booking Tips for Supetar

  1. Book by April for July and August. Properties close to Banj and Vela Luka beaches sell out first.
  2. Check parking. Spaces in the old centre are scarce. Apartments with a reserved space are worth the small premium if arriving by car.
  3. Look for air conditioning. Summer nights are hot. Most hotels have it, but some older apartments do not.
  4. Decide whether a car is needed. Supetar works well on foot, but Bol, Zlatni Rat and the interior villages are far easier with a car. Local buses run, but more rarely in the evening.
  5. Avoid ground-floor rooms on the harbour front in peak season. The noise and foot traffic are constant.

The marketing for the largest resorts shows calm bays and empty sun loungers. In reality, Vela Luka's beaches fill from late morning in August, so arrive before 9:30 for a free spot.

09Beaches by Area

Acapulco (by the port)
pebbly, convenient, busy.
Banj
pebbles at the edge, sand underwater, good for swimming.
Tri Bridges
pebbly, beside the Waterman complex.
Vela Luka
sandy and shallow, the top choice for children.

10Final Recommendation

For a first visit, choose a room or apartment in Banj or just behind the harbour. These two areas give beach access and restaurants without needing transport. Families with young children should look at the Vela Luka peninsula instead. Villa renters should pick Mirca or Vela Luka.
