01Tučepi vs Makarska at a Glance
Tučepi and Makarska sit on the same stretch of the Makarska Riviera, below the Biokovo mountain. Tučepi is a village of roughly 2,000 residents. Makarska is the regional town, with around 13,000 residents and a full-size harbour, bus station and ferry port. The distance between them is about 4 km, and a flat coastal walk takes roughly 50–60 minutes.
The real question is not which place is better, but which one suits the way you holiday.
02Beaches: Tučepi vs Makarska
Tučepi beaches
Tučepi has one of the longest continuous beaches on the riviera, about 4 km of fine pebble running along the village. The water is clear and shallow at the edges, then drops off quickly. The central stretch near the harbour has sunbeds, water sports and beach bars. The ends of the beach, towards Kamena and towards Makarska, are much quieter. Large resort hotels such as Hotel Alga and Hotel Tučepi sit directly on the shore, which means many guests never need to leave the beach.
Makarska beaches
Makarska's main beach is Donja Luka, in the town centre, and the better-known Osejava forest park lies on the Sveti Petar peninsula with shaded pebble coves and a long walk. The Makarska beaches are attractive, but in July and August the central ones fill up by about 10:00.
Verdict on beaches
Tučepi wins for space. Makarska wins for variety and walking access to coves and forest paths. Both have Blue Flag-standard water quality in most seasons.
03Crowds and Atmosphere
Makarska is busy from late June to early September. The Kačić Square and the seafront promenade are full from about 19:00, with cafés, souvenir stalls and street performers. Cruise-style day visitors and bus tours add to the pressure in peak weeks.
Tučepi is calmer. The village has a harbour, a promenade with restaurants and ice cream spots, and a small old hamlet called Podgradina on the slope, with stone houses and narrow lanes. Evenings are relaxed, with dinner and a walk along the sea. By 23:00 the village is mostly quiet.
In May, June and late September both places are noticeably calmer, and prices are 20–35% lower than in August.
04Families vs Nightlife
Best for families: Tučepi
Tučepi works well for families because the beach is directly next to the hotels and apartments, the promenade is mostly pedestrian, and the water is gentle at the edge. Several hotels include kids' clubs, pools and animation programmes. A lot of apartment accommodation is within 100–300 m of the sea, so the daily beach routine is simple.
Best for nightlife: Makarska
Makarska is the clear choice for going out. The seafront bars and clubs run late in summer, and some beach clubs host DJ nights. Cocktails in the centre usually cost €8–12, and a beer is about €4–5. If you want to stay out after midnight, sleeping in Tučepi means a €8–12 taxi ride back, and prices rise late at night.
Couples and older travellers
Tučepi suits couples who want a hotel with a spa or a quiet dinner. Makarska suits groups of friends and younger travellers.
05Price Level: Tučepi vs Makarska
Tučepi has more mid-range and upper-mid-range hotels, so room prices are often higher than comparable apartments in Makarska. Apartments in either place usually cost €70–140 per night for two in July and August, and €45–80 in shoulder season.
Food costs are similar. A main course at a seaside restaurant is about €14–25, grilled fish by the kilo about €60–90, a pizza €9–13, and a coffee €2–2.50. Makarska has more cheap options, such as bakeries, pizza slices and grocery shops, so budget travellers usually spend less there. Tučepi has fewer shops, though it has supermarkets and a market-style stall area in season.
Parking is a hidden cost in Makarska. Central paid parking can cost €1.50–3 per hour in summer, and street spaces fill up quickly. Many Tučepi accommodations include parking.
06Day Trips from Tučepi and Makarska
Both bases give you almost identical access to the riviera, but Makarska is better for public transport.
- Biokovo Skywalk and Nature Park
- The Skywalk at Vošac, a glass-floored platform at about 1,228 m, is one of the most popular excursions. Tučepi is the starting point for the road to Sv. Jure, the highest peak in Biokovo at 1,762 m, which starts near the village. Check the weather first, since wind can close the road.
- Brela
- Around 13 km from Makarska, the beaches here, including Punta Rata, are among the best in Croatia. Buses run frequently.
- Brač and Hvar
- Ferries to Sumartin (Brač) leave from Makarska. Hvar town is reached with a passenger boat from Makarska or via the ferry from Drvenik. Tučepi has a small number of boat tours from the harbour.
- Omiš and Cetina river
- About 60 km north-west, for rafting and zipline trips, a half-day excursion by car or bus.
- Split and Dubrovnik
- Split is about 80 km, roughly 1.5 hours by bus. Dubrovnik is around 150 km and is possible but long; two days are better.
- Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
- About 2.5 hours away, often a full-day tour.
The Tučepi–Makarska bus runs along the coastal road, and in summer buses are frequent. Bring your passport for any trip into Bosnia and Herzegovina.
07Local Tips
- Walk the coastal promenade from Tučepi to Makarska in the early morning or at sunset, and take the bus or a taxi back.
- In Tučepi, choose accommodation east of the harbour if you want the quietest evenings.
- In Makarska, book anything on the seafront well in advance for August, and ask about noise if you want to sleep before 01:00.
- Buy ferry tickets early for peak weeks, and arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before departure with a car.
- Paying for a sunbed at a hotel-run beach section is usually not worth the extra cost in Tučepi; the free pebble stretches a few minutes away are just as good, and you can bring your own towel.
08Verdict: Choose Tučepi If..., Choose Makarska If...
Choose Tučepi if:
- you are travelling with children or want a calm beach holiday
- you prefer a resort hotel with pool and beach in one place
- you want a long, less crowded pebble beach
- you are happy to go to Makarska for dinner or a night out and come back to quiet
Choose Makarska if:
- you want bars, clubs and a busy promenade within walking distance
- you rely on buses and ferries for day trips and do not want to rent a car
- you are on a tighter budget and want more cheap eating options
- you want a real town with shops, markets, pharmacies and services
For most travellers, Tučepi is the better base for a week-long stay, because Makarska is only 8–10 minutes away and stays easy to visit. Only choose Makarska as your base if nightlife or public transport is a priority.
