01Is Varaždin a good destination for toddlers?

Yes, with limits. Varaždin is a small city of about 40,000 people in northern Croatia, roughly 80 km north of Zagreb. Everything a family needs sits within a 15-minute walk of the main square, Trg kralja Tomislava. The old centre is mostly car-free, which makes it safe for a toddler to walk or ride in a stroller without constant traffic checks.

The city has no theme parks and no large dedicated children's attractions. It is a calm, slow destination. Families who want rides and animation will find it quiet. Families with children under 6 who like parks, short walks and ice cream will find it easy.

02Best time to visit with young children

June to early September
Warm enough for the Aquacity lake. This is the only period when swimming is practical.
May and late September
Mild weather, fewer visitors, good for parks and walking.
Late August
The Špancirfest street festival in the last week of August fills the centre with crowds. It is fun for children aged 4 and up, but difficult with a stroller in the evening.
Winter
Cold and often grey. Indoor options are limited to museums, the theatre and the thermal pools in Varaždinske Toplice.

03Toddler-friendly sights in Varaždin

Old Town (Stari grad) and the surrounding park

The white medieval fortress on the northwest edge of the centre has housed the City Museum (Gradski muzej Varaždin) since 1925. For toddlers, the value is outside: a moat, a drawbridge, round towers and a landscaped park with wide paths and grass to run on. The courtyard works for a stroller; the interior has stairs and uneven floors.

Museum prices (list from February 2026): adults €5, students, pupils and pensioners €3, family ticket €13 (maximum 2 adults plus children). Tickets are charged separately for each department. The City Museum runs in three buildings: the Old Town, Herzer Palace and Sermage Palace. A combined ticket for all three exists, and its family version costs €28.

The museum offers a free group guided tour with a purchased ticket on Saturdays at 11:00, designed to suit adults and children together. Children with a MIŠ card and Friends of the Museum members enter free.

Opinion: The Old Town interior is not worth the ticket for children under 4. The park and moat give the same fairytale-castle effect for nothing, so spend the €13 only when children are old enough to look at exhibits for 30 minutes.

Herzer Palace entomological collection

Herzer Palace holds a collection of about 4,500 insect exhibits. Children from about age 4 tend to enjoy it more than the castle rooms, and it takes around 30 minutes.

Trg kralja Tomislava and the car-free centre

The main square, Town Hall and surrounding streets are paved with smooth stone, and a stroller handles them easily. Cafés and ice cream shops line the square, and fountains and open space let toddlers move around. A walk from the square to the Old Town park takes about 10 minutes.

Varaždin Cemetery

The cemetery is protected as a horticultural monument and functions as a quiet, shaded park of clipped hedges and wide paths. It is a calm stroller walk on hot days, but it is a place of mourning, so keep voices low and avoid it during funerals.

04Aquacity: the free lake for summer

Aquacity, locally called the "Varaždin Sea", sits about 3 km from the centre. Entry to the complex is free. It has more than 5,000 square meters of landscaped beach and green space, mostly under natural shade, a children's playground and a separate swimming area for non-swimmers.

Shade matters for toddlers, and Aquacity has more of it than most Croatian seaside beaches. Bring your own sun tent anyway for babies, and pack swim nappies. Cafés on site sell food, so no pre-packing is necessary. By car the trip takes 5–10 minutes; a taxi from the centre is the simplest option if you have no car seat adapter for a bus.

05Day trips with young children

Varaždinske Toplice (about 20 km)

The spa town lies about 20 km south-east of Varaždin, and the bus ride takes about 30 minutes. Some hotels admit non-guests to their thermal pools for a fee, which is the best wet-weather option in the region. The local museum sits in the town's Old Town and oversees the Roman Aquae Iasae archaeological park. Check the age and temperature rules for each pool before arriving; thermal water is often too hot for children under 3.

Trakošćan Castle (about 40 km)

The 13th-century castle stands beside a lake with a flat walking path around the water. A stroller works on the lakeside path but not inside the castle. Allow a half day and use a car.

06Children's theatre

The Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin (HNK Varaždin) runs children's performances. Children up to 16 years pay 50% of the ticket price when accompanied by an adult, and the balcony is not sold for children's shows. Performances are in Croatian, so they suit children who enjoy puppets and music over dialogue.

07Practical tips for parents

Strollers
Choose a sturdy stroller with larger wheels. Cobbles in side streets rattle small wheels, but the main squares are smooth.
Getting there
Zagreb is about 80 km away. The drive takes roughly an hour. Trains and buses also run from Zagreb.
Parking
The centre is largely pedestrian, so park outside it and walk in. A hotel on the edge of the centre is more convenient than one inside it.
Meals
Most restaurants offer a children's portion on request and have high chairs, but ask in advance. Croatian restaurants often serve lunch from 12:00 to 15:00, and early dinners before 18:00 are easy to find.
Nap schedule
Midday is the quietest time of day, with shops often closing. A walk in the Old Town park during the nap works well with a stroller.
Rain plan
Combine the City Museum (family ticket €13) with a café stop, or take the bus to Varaždinske Toplice.

08Suggested 2-day plan with a toddler

Day 1: Walk the main square in the morning, have an ice cream, then visit the Old Town park and moat. After a nap, have an early dinner in the centre.

Day 2 (summer): Spend the morning at Aquacity, have lunch there, then rest. Day 2 (cooler months): Take the bus to Varaždinske Toplice for pools, or visit the museum on a Saturday for the 11:00 family tour.
