Vis is the furthest inhabited island off the Croatian mainland, accessible via a 2.5-hour ferry ride from Split. It caters to independent travelers looking for a quieter, less commercially developed alternative to neighboring Hvar or Brač. The island is known for its military history, agricultural interior, and rocky coves. It has no large resort hotels, relying instead on private apartments, villas, and a few small boutique accommodations.
The travel season is strictly seasonal, running from May to October, with peak ferry connections and restaurant operations in July and August. Visitors typically base themselves in one of the two main settlements—Vis Town or Komiža—and use a car or scooter to access remote beaches on the southern coast.
