01How Many Days Do You Need in Cres?
Three days cover the main sights without rushing. Two days work if you skip Osor and the Tramuntana walks. A single day trip from the mainland is possible but tight, because the drive from Porozina to Cres Town alone takes about 35 minutes.
Cres is 66 km long and narrow, and the main road (D100) runs down its spine from Porozina to Mali Lošinj. Distances look short on a map, but the roads are winding. Allow 40–50 minutes between most villages.
02Getting to Cres and Getting Around
Ferry from Brestova to Porozina
The Jadrolinija ferry (line 334) crosses from Brestova, near Opatija, to Porozina in about 20 minutes. A regular passenger ticket costs €4.40 and a child aged 3–12 pays €2.20. A car up to 5 m long and 2 m high costs €20.70. Longer or taller vehicles cost €31.80. Departures run roughly every 90 minutes through the day, with early and late sailings in season. Check the current timetable before travelling, since the schedule changes by season.
In July and August, arrive at Brestova 60–90 minutes before departure with a car. Foot passengers do not need to queue as long.
Why a Car Matters
Buses between Cres Town and the outlying villages run rarely, and Lubenice, Beli and Valun are all off the main road. A rental car or your own vehicle is the practical choice. Cyclists with e-bikes can manage the Cres Town–Valun stretch, but the climbs to Lubenice and Beli are steep.
03Day 1: Cres Town and Valun
Morning in Cres Town
Cres Town is the largest settlement on the island and has a Venetian-style harbour. Walk through the old city gate and the clock tower, then see the stone-paved squares. Trg Frane Petrića is the central square and the site of the fruit and vegetable market. The Franciscan Monastery holds a 13th-century church and a small museum with religious art and a rare 15th-century book.
Allow 2–3 hours. Park outside the old core near the harbour edge and walk in.
Afternoon in Valun
Valun is a small fishing village between two pebble beaches, about 10 km from Cres Town. The Valun Tablet, one of Croatia's oldest Glagolitic monuments, dates to the 11th century and is linked to the village church. Swim at the village beaches, then eat dinner by the water. Valun is a quiet base and is much calmer than Cres Town in the evening.
04Day 2: Lubenice and Its Beach
Lubenice Village
Lubenice sits on a rocky ridge 378 m above the sea. The village is semi-abandoned, with stone houses, a church and a small Sheep Breeding Museum. The walk through the village takes only 20–30 minutes, but the views across to the Istrian coast are the main reason to come. Cars must stop at the village edge.
Walking Down to Lubenice Beach
The pebble beach below is often named among the best in Croatia. The descent takes 40–60 minutes on a steep path, and the climb back is tiring. Bring 1.5 litres of water per person, shoes with grip and a swim bag. There is no shade on the way back up.
The alternative is a taxi boat from Valun or Cres Town. Boat prices vary by operator and group size, so confirm the fare before boarding. Walking down and taking the boat back is a sensible compromise on a hot day.
Opinion: Do not attempt the Lubenice beach walk between 12:00 and 16:00 in July or August. The return climb in full sun is the most common mistake on Cres, and it ruins the day.
05Day 3: Beli, Tramuntana and Osor
Beli and the Griffon Vultures
Beli is the oldest village on the island. It sits on a hill 130 m above the sea and has only about 30 residents. Cars park a few hundred metres before the old town. The Beli visitor centre, which includes the Eco-Centre Caput Insulae and a vulture rescue centre, explains the Eurasian griffon vulture colony on the nearby cliffs. It also gives information on trails and cycling routes. Vultures are easiest to see in the early morning and late afternoon.
Beli Beach is a pebble beach a short distance from the village.
Tramuntana Forest
The Tramuntana region in the north is covered by oak, chestnut and hornbeam forest, with dry-stone walls and old shepherd settlements. A moderate option is the roughly 19 km mountain bike loop through the northern forests. Walkers can use shorter trails from Beli to abandoned hamlets such as Frantin. Cres has more than 100 km of marked trails overall.
Osor in the Afternoon
Osor lies on the narrow channel between Cres and Lošinj, about 25 km south of Cres Town. The old town is small and has open-air sculptures and a quiet main square. The swing bridge over the channel opens for boats at set times, usually morning and late afternoon, so check the schedule if you want to see it move. If you continue to Mali Lošinj, add about 30 minutes of driving.
06Where to Stay in Cres
| Area | Best for | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Cres Town | Restaurants, harbour, central for the south of the island | Private rooms and apartments from about €30–€60 per person per night off-season; higher in July and August |
| Valun | Quiet beach base | Similar to Cres Town, fewer options |
| Beli | Hiking, vultures, early starts | Camps and small guesthouses |
| Martinšćica | Wild beaches, kayaking | Campsites and apartments |
Book two to three months ahead for July and August. Accommodation in Cres Town fills first.
07Local Tips
- Fill the fuel tank in Cres Town. Petrol stations on the island are few.
- Cres is known for lamb and olive oil. Ask restaurants whether the lamb is from the island.
- Start the day early. Lubenice, Beli and Valun are far calmer before 10:00.
- Mobile signal is weak in Tramuntana. Download offline maps before you go.
- Equipment rentals for snorkelling, kayaks and bikes are available in Cres Town, Martinšćica and Valun.
- A second ferry runs from Valbiska on Krk to Merag on Cres. This is a good option when arriving from Krk.
08Best Time to Visit Cres
Late May, June and September have warm sea, open restaurants and lower prices. July and August are hot, and ferry queues and parking at Lubenice are at their worst. April and October suit hikers, but swimming is cold and some businesses close.
