01What Are the Top Attractions in Cres?
Cres is one of the two largest islands in the Adriatic, with about 2,800 residents and many thousands of sheep. The headline sights are spread along one main road, so a rental car or scooter makes the island far easier. The core list: Cres Town, Lubenice, Sveti Ivan beach, the Beli griffon vulture centre and Vransko jezero. Everything else is secondary.
02Cres Town: Old Town and Harbour
Cres Town is the island's only real town and the logical base. The harbour is Venetian in character, lined with stone houses, café terraces and working fishing boats, and it takes about 15 minutes to walk around.
What to see in the old town
- Porta Marcella: the old town gate, reached from the harbour side.
- Venetian clock tower and Municipal Loggia: both stand close to the harbour and mark the centre of town life.
- Remains of the city walls: short sections still stand around the old quarter.
- Franciscan Monastery: it has a 13th-century church and a small museum with religious art and a rare 15th-century book.
- Church of St Mary of the Snow (Sv. Marija): a short stop on the old-town loop.
Allow 2 to 3 hours for the full circuit with a coffee stop. The old town is compact, flat and entirely pedestrian, so no ticket or tour is needed. Evenings are the best time, when the harbour fills and the stone lanes cool down.
Local tip: Cres Town is small and quiet compared with Dubrovnik or Split. Do not expect nightlife. Dinner on the harbour is the evening activity.
03Lubenice: The Clifftop Village
Lubenice is the single most memorable stop on Cres. The village sits on a ridge about 378 to 382 m above the sea, roughly 20 km from Cres Town. Its stone houses are arranged in three rows along the limestone crest, with remains of medieval fortifications and a few churches.
The village is small. A walk through it takes 30 to 45 minutes. The main draw is the view over the Kvarner Gulf and down to Sveti Ivan bay. A small Sheep Breeding Museum, run as a volunteer project, covers the island's shepherding heritage. Opening hours there are irregular.
Lubenice Evenings is a summer series of classical and other concerts in the village. Check the dates before travelling, since performances usually run in July and August and the setting is part of the appeal.
Local tip: The final stretch of road is narrow with few passing places. Drive slowly, and do not rely on public buses, which reach Lubenice only on limited days and at very early hours.
04Sveti Ivan Beach
Sveti Ivan (St John's beach) is a pebble cove directly below Lubenice. It is often named among Croatia's best beaches because of its clear turquoise water and the cliff above it.
There are two ways to reach it:
- On foot from Lubenice: a steep descent of about 40 minutes. The climb back takes longer, usually 45 to 60 minutes in heat.
- By boat: tour operators in Cres Town harbour run trips to the beach, often combined with a sea cave stop. Prices vary by operator and season, so confirm at the harbour.
The beach has no developed facilities. Carry water, sturdy shoes and shade, since the cove is exposed in midday summer sun. Skip the hike in strong heat or wet weather, because the path is rocky.
05Beli and the Griffon Vultures
Beli is one of the oldest settlements on Cres, built on a hill roughly 130 m above the east coast, about 20 km north of Cres Town. It is the base for the island's griffon vulture colony, one of the few left in the Mediterranean region. The Caput Insulae eco centre was set up to protect the birds.
Beli Visitor Centre and Rescue Centre
- Tickets from 1 April to 31 October
- €7 for adults, €4 for children aged 7 to 14, free under 7.
- Tickets from 1 November to 31 March
- €5 adults, €3 children.
- Opening hours
- vary by season and are longest from June to August. Check the current schedule before going.
- Time needed
- 1 to 2 hours.
The exhibits cover vulture biology and island heritage, and there is a headset that gives a bird's-eye view. Camera feeds show the birds in the rescue area. Griffon vultures have a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.8 m, which is easy to appreciate when they circle above the cliffs near Beli.
Local tip: The centre is hard to find by car, with little signage, so set the navigation before leaving Beli's upper village. Park below the old town and walk up, since the lanes are narrow.
Boat trips for watching vultures from the sea also leave from Beli. These run about 2 hours, and prices vary a lot between operators, so compare options before booking. The cliff walking trails around Beli are free.
06Vransko Jezero (Lake Vrana)
Vransko jezero is a freshwater lake in the middle of the island. Its surface lies above sea level, while its bottom reaches about 74 m below it. It supplies drinking water for both Cres and Lošinj, so swimming and direct access to the water are prohibited. Visit for the viewpoints on the road alongside the lake, not for activities. Stops take 15 to 30 minutes, which fits well between Cres Town and the south.
07Valun: Waterfront Lunch
Valun is a small bay village about 12 km from Cres Town. It is known for a handful of waterfront restaurants and the Valun Tablet, an 11th-century Glagolitic inscription kept in the parish church. Use it as a lunch stop rather than a half-day destination.
08Best Activities on Cres
Swimming and beaches
Sveti Ivan is the headline cove. Near Cres Town, the pebble and rock beaches of the Kimen area are a short walk from the centre and suit families who skip the long drive. Water is clear on the whole island, and summer sea temperature typically reaches 24 to 26 °C in August.
Hiking and cycling
Cres has many marked trails and quiet roads. The Lubenice to Sveti Ivan path and the cliff trails around Beli are the most rewarding for short hikes. Equipment rentals are available in Cres Town, Martinšćica and Valun.
Eating local lamb
Cres lamb, raised on wild herbs, is the island's signature dish. It is often cooked under a peka (a bell-shaped lid) and usually needs ordering a day ahead. Konoba Bukaleta in Loznati village serves it, with 24 hours' notice advised for peka dishes. Olive oil from the island is another buy worth making.
09Suggested 3-Day Plan for the Main Sights
- Day 1
- Cres Town old town, harbour, Franciscan Monastery, Kimen beach.
- Day 2
- Lubenice in the morning, Sveti Ivan beach swim, lamb lunch.
- Day 3
- Beli Visitor Centre, Beli cliff trails, Vransko jezero viewpoint on the way back.
10Best Time to Visit
June to September suits swimming and brings the most events. May and late September are quieter, with milder hiking weather. Beli's opening hours are shortest outside summer, so check them first. If time is limited, choose Lubenice over any beach hop if time is limited, since it offers the best single view on the island.
11Getting Around
A car is the practical choice. Distances are short, with most main sights within 20 to 25 km of Cres Town, but public transport is thin and often limited to early departures. Fuel up in Cres Town, and expect winding, narrow roads to Lubenice and Beli.
