01Where to Stay in Cres with Kids
Cres Town: best all-round base
Cres Town has the widest choice of apartments, a harbour promenade, supermarkets, a pharmacy and a health centre. Apartments here are often 200 to 700 m from pebble beaches and the old centre, so a car is not needed for daily life. Families of four can usually find a one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment with a terrace, kitchen and air conditioning. Expect roughly €70 to €150 per night in July and August, and lower rates in June and September.
When comparing listings, check four things: air conditioning, a shaded terrace, parking, and the distance to the sea on foot. Most children's beach days are short, so a 10-minute walk with a stroller matters more than a sea view.
Beli: quiet, nature-focused
Beli is a small hilltop village in the north with a pebble beach, a small harbour and a diving base that starts from the shore. It suits families with school-age children who like hiking, wildlife and low-key evenings. Restaurant and shop choice is limited, so plan on a car and a weekly shop in Cres Town.
Valun and Martinšćica: village beaches
Valun has a compact beach and a short waterfront. Martinšćica has more beach bars and water sports. Both work for families who want to be on the sea but accept a drive for groceries.
Podol and inland stays
The inland hamlet of Podol sits at about 240 m above sea level on the road towards Lubenice. Stone houses with pools and gardens are common here. They are good for older children and a quiet week, but the sea is a drive away.
02Best Beaches for Children on Cres
- KovaÄŤine
- Pebble beach with a long shallow area, changing cabins and toilets, and a Blue Flag. It is the safest choice for non-swimmers and toddlers.
- Slatina
- Pebble beach where pedal boats can be rented. Animators run kids' activities and playgrounds are close.
- Raca and Zdovica, Valun
- Small, calm beaches in a village setting, with cafés within a few steps.
- Stara Porozina
- A wild pebble cove sheltered from wind, near the ferry port.
Pack water shoes. Almost every beach on Cres is pebble or rock, and sharp stones are the most common complaint from small children.
For children under seven, KovaÄŤine is the safest choice on the island.
03Top Activities for Kids
Beli Visitor Centre and Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre
The centre in Beli cares for injured griffon vultures and is the only facility in Croatia devoted solely to them. Tickets from 1 April to 31 October cost €7 for adults and €4 for children aged 7 to 14. Children under 7 enter free. From 1 November to 31 March, prices drop to €5 and €3. Opening hours change by season (longest from June to August), so check the current schedule before going. Griffons nest on the cliffs near Beli, and the Kvarner region holds one of the few remaining Croatian colonies.
Boat trips and hidden beaches
A boat from Beli offers griffon vulture watching and stops at hidden beaches. Pansion Tramontana in Beli arranges these excursions. Book ahead in summer, and confirm the age limits and life jacket sizes for young children.
Bike rides, diving and excursions at Camp KovaÄŤine
Camp KovaÄŤine offers bike tours, scuba diving lessons and excursions for families. Use it as an activity base even if you are staying in an apartment.
Lake Vrana
Lake Vrana is the island's freshwater lake, and it is a good stop for children who like birds and walking. Allow a half day and bring water and snacks, as services are minimal.
Lubenice and the walk to Sveti Ivan
Lubenice is a hilltop village with long views. The path to Sveti Ivan beach is a steep descent of about 45 minutes, so it suits teenagers and not small children.
04Getting to Cres with Children
The fastest route from the mainland is the Jadrolinija ferry from Brestova to Porozina. The crossing takes 20 minutes. A foot passenger ticket costs around €4–5 and children aged 3 to 12 pay about half. Summer sailings run roughly every 90 minutes through the day. From Porozina, the D100 road leads to Cres Town and on to Mali Lošinj.
Insider tips:
- In July and August, arrive at Brestova at least one hour before departure if driving. Queues can be long on Saturdays.
- Buy groceries in Cres Town before moving to Beli or inland. Village shops are small and close early.
- Do beach time before 11:00 and after 17:00. Midday shade is scarce on most pebble beaches.
- June and September have warm water, lower rents and quieter beaches. They suit toddlers best.
