01Which Day Trips from Karlovac Are Worth the Time?

Karlovac is a practical base for day trips. The A1 motorway to Zagreb and the coast runs past the town, the old D1 road heads south to Slunj and Plitvice, and rivers (Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica, Dobra) feed several nature stops within 30 minutes. Plitvice Lakes is the headline trip. Rastoke, Samobor and Ogulin are the easiest add-ons. Zagreb works as a city day without any overnight stay.

All distances and times below are from central Karlovac by car, outside peak summer congestion.

02Plitvice Lakes National Park (about 90 km, 1h15)

Plitvice is the strongest reason to leave Karlovac for a day. The park holds 16 terraced lakes linked by waterfalls and wooden boardwalks, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall) drops 78 m and is the tallest in the park.

Ticket prices

In 2026, adult one-day tickets cost:

€10
from November to March
€23
in April, May and October
€40
from June to September

In summer, entry after 4 pm (3 pm in September) costs €25. Children aged 7 to 18 pay €4 to €15 depending on season, and children under 7 enter free. The ticket includes the electric boat across Lake Kozjak and the panoramic train inside the park. Parking is charged separately.

How to do it from Karlovac

Drive
via the D1 through Slunj to Entrance 1 or Entrance 2. Entrance 1 is the better choice for the Lower Lakes and Veliki Slap.
Book online
for June to September. Entry is timed, daily numbers are capped, and sold-out slots are common in July and August. You may arrive up to one hour after the time on your ticket, but not before it.
Plan 4 to 6 hours
inside. A full Karlovac round trip with the park is about 9 to 10 hours.

Local tip: October and April are the best months. Tickets cost €23 instead of €40, crowds are smaller, and spring meltwater makes the falls strongest. In July and August, book the earliest slot or the afternoon ticket to avoid the tour-bus peak around 10 am.

03Rastoke and Slunj (about 40 km, 35–40 min)

Rastoke is a small village of old watermills built over cascades where the Slunjčica river meets the Korana. It is often called the "small Plitvice" and sits directly on the route between Karlovac and Plitvice. Walking the village is free, though some access points to the closest waterfall views are paid (around €9 at some entrances) and others run through restaurants.

Time needed
1 to 1.5 hours.
Best use
a stop on the way to Plitvice or a half-day on its own.
Food
trout is the local dish at the riverside restaurants. Expect €12 to €20 for a main course.

Opinion: Rastoke is worth the stop, but it does not justify a full day on its own. Pair it with Plitvice, the Korana canyon, or the Mrežnica river.

04Zagreb (about 55 km, 40 min)

Zagreb is the simplest city trip from Karlovac. The A1 takes about 40 minutes by car. Regional trains and buses run several times daily; one-way fares are roughly €6 to €10, and the journey takes about 50 to 70 minutes. Check current timetables on the HŽ Putnički prijevoz and Autobusni kolodvor Karlovac sites before travelling.

Time needed
6 to 8 hours covers the Upper Town, Dolac market, Tkalčićeva street and one museum.
Tip
Go on a weekday. Many museums close on Mondays, and Dolac market is liveliest on Saturday mornings.
Parking
park outside the centre and use trams (single ticket about €1 to €2) to avoid zone parking costs.

05Samobor (about 45 km, 45 min)

Samobor is a small town at the foot of the Samobor hills (Samoborsko gorje), known for its Baroque centre, mustard and the samoborska kremšnita cream cake. The old town is walkable in one hour. The Old Town Samobor castle ruins and hiking trails above town add a half-day of walking.

Time needed
3 to 5 hours.
Combine with
a Zagreb stop on the same day by driving via Jastrebarsko or the A1.
Cost
a slice of kremšnita costs about €3 to €4.

Local tip: On the way to Samobor from Karlovac, the Jastrebarsko wine area (Plešivica hills) has family wine cellars open for tasting by appointment, usually from €10 to €20 per person.

06Ogulin and Mount Klek (about 55 km, 45 min)

Ogulin is Croatia's "homeland of fairy tales", named for writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, who was born there. Ivana's House of Fairy Tales is a multimedia visitor centre in town. The Đulin ponor, a sinkhole into which the Dobra river disappears, links to the Medvedica Cave system, explored for more than 15 km and recorded as Croatia's longest speleological system.

Mount Klek rises above town and is the main hiking target. The summit is a hike of several hours, so a full hiking day suits fit visitors only.

Train
Ogulin is on the Zagreb to Rijeka and Split rail lines, so a train from Karlovac is an option.
Event note
the Ogulin Fairy Tale Festival runs each June. Entry to the festival is free.

07Mrežnica and Kupa Rivers (10–30 km)

The Mrežnica river, starting near Duga Resa, is one of the clearest in Croatia, with 93 waterfalls and tufa barriers along its course. It is the best short-distance summer trip from Karlovac.

Canoe and kayak rental
about €15 to €30 per person for half a day at operators in Mrežnički Brig and Duga Resa.
Best months
June to September. Water is cool even in July.
Swimming
designated swimming spots exist along the river, but check local signage first.
Tip
start paddling early in the morning, as weekend afternoons get busy.

08Longer Options: Rijeka and the Coast (about 130 km, 1h30)

The A6 motorway connects the Karlovac area to Rijeka in roughly 1h30. Rijeka, Opatija and the Kvarner coast fit a long day in summer, but expect tolls of roughly €10 to €15 each way for the motorway. Total round-trip driving is about 3 hours, so this is only worth it for a swim and a seafront lunch.
