01Myth 1: Krka is a place to hop between islands

The phrase "island hopping" fits the Adriatic coast nearby, not Krka. The park covers 109 km² along a river, and it contains one island that visitors can land on: Visovac. It sits in a wide lake between the Skradinski buk and Roški slap waterfalls. A Franciscan monastery, Our Lady of Mercy, has stood there since 1445. It includes a church, a small museum and gardens with cypress trees.

Reality: The "hop" is a river boat route with three stops: Skradinski buk, Visovac and Roški slap. The 4-hour excursion from Skradinski buk gives 30 minutes on Visovac and about 1.5 hours at Roški slap. It costs €20 for adults and €15 for children.

Better alternative: If you want real islands, add Šibenik archipelago boats (Zlarin, Prvić) on a separate day. Use Krka for the single island, the river canyon and the waterfalls.

02Myth 2: The boat is covered by your entrance ticket

Only one boat is included: the Skradin to Skradinski buk shuttle, about 20-25 minutes each way. Visovac is a separate purchase. Prices for adults:

  • Skradinski buk to Visovac and back, 2 hours: €15
  • Skradinski buk to Visovac and RoÅ¡ki slap, 4 hours: €20
  • Stinice or Remetić to Visovac, short crossing: €10 return
  • Skradinski buk to ÄŒikola canyon, 45 minutes with no stops: €10

The monastery has no entrance fee. You pay for the boat and the park ticket.

Better alternative: Skip the 2-hour excursion if you only want the monastery and have a car. The Stinice and Remetić crossing is shorter and €5 cheaper. The 4-hour trip is the better value for first-timers, because €20 covers both Visovac and Roški slap.

The Čikola canyon trip is the weakest purchase. 45 minutes with no stops for €10 does not match the other trips. Skip it unless you have spent the day at Skradinski buk and want a cheap extra hour on the water.

03Myth 3: You can swim beside the waterfalls

Older photos and some tour listings still show swimmers at Skradinski buk. Swimming there has been banned since January 2021 to protect the travertine. Swimming elsewhere is allowed only in marked areas near Roški slap, Stinice and Pisak, from 1 June to 30 September.

Better alternative: Take the 4-hour excursion and bring swimwear for Roški slap. The Stinice area is useful if you cross to Visovac from that side. Water in the river stays cold even in August, so expect a short swim. Wet-weather shoes help on the rocks.

The island itself is not a swimming stop. Visitors on Visovac are guests at an active monastery. Dogs are not allowed on the island or at Krka Monastery.

04Myth 4: July and August are the right time to go

Adult entry is €40 from June to September. After 15:00 in those months it drops to €30. The rest of the year is much cheaper: €20 in April, May and October, and €7 from November to March. Children aged 7–18 pay €15 in summer, and under-7s enter free.

Boat excursions run April to October. In winter there are no park excursions, but boats still run from Remetići and Stinice to Visovac. The 4-hour Roški slap excursion is therefore a spring-to-autumn plan.

Better alternative: May, June or September give strong water flow, warm weather and smaller crowds than August. Skradinski buk and Roški slap run 9:00–16:00 in winter and longer in other months, so check closing times before a late start. On 2 and 15 August the island opens only to pilgrims. Do not plan a Visovac trip on those dates.

Insider perspective: the 15:00 ticket discount does not work well with the 4-hour excursion. Boats are timed for the morning and midday, so a late entry limits you to the Skradinski buk boardwalk circuit of 60–90 minutes.

05Myth 5: You need a tour operator to reach Visovac

Day excursions from Split, Trogir or Zadar cost about €50–€60 per person with transport, entry and a boat. They suit travelers without a car. The drive from Split is about 85 km, around an hour, so the main benefit of a tour is convenience.

Park boat excursions to Visovac cannot be booked online. They are sold on site only. Park entry tickets can be bought online, which helps in July and August when capacity limits apply.

Better alternative: Drive or take a regular bus to Skradin from Split, Zadar or Å ibenik. Buy the entry ticket online and the boat ticket at the jetty. Visitors with a car can enter via Lozovac, where a bus takes you down to the falls. Skradin is better if you want the included boat ride.

Insider perspective: Skradin has the most useful base. It sits at the park edge and works for an overnight stay, which lets you be at the jetty before the tour buses arrive.

06What to book first for a Visovac day

Buy the park entry ticket online and plan around the boat departures at Skradinski buk. Choose the 4-hour Visovac + Roški slap excursion (€20) if you can spare half a day, or the Stinice/Remetić crossing (€10) if you are driving past. Aim for May, June or September. Pack swimwear only for Roški slap, and do not expect to swim at the main falls.
