01What Are the Top Attractions in Labin?
Labin (Albona in Italian) is a hilltop town on the east coast of Istria. The old town sits about 320 m above the sea and overlooks Rabac and the island of Cres. The town splits into two parts: a compact medieval old town on the ridge and a newer lower town with most shops and services. Labin has no beach of its own, so the standard plan pairs a morning in the old town with an afternoon in Rabac.
Pula Airport is about 40 km southwest, Rijeka about 60 km northwest. A car is the easiest way to arrive. Half a day covers the old town and museum, and a full day works if Rabac is added.
02Labin National Museum and the Mine Tunnel
The museum is the single most important stop in town. It occupies the Baroque Battiala-Lazzarini Palace at Ulica 1. maja 6 and was founded in 1960. Lonely Planet named it the most original museum in Croatia in 2005.
The 150 m reconstructed mine
The cellars hold a reconstructed mining gallery about 150 m long. It was built between 1961 and 1964 with direct help from the Raša coal mines. Visitors get a helmet and walk through low, narrow passages with tools and equipment on display. Allow about 15 minutes for the tunnel and 60 to 90 minutes for the whole museum. People who dislike tight spaces should know the passage is cramped.
Upstairs collections
Above ground the museum covers local history from prehistory through the Venetian period. It also covers the 1921 Labin Republic, a short-lived miners' uprising. It has an ethnographic section and a memorial collection for the teacher Giuseppina Martinuzzi (1844–1924). Exhibit texts are in Croatian, English, Italian and German.
Hours and tickets
Published opening hours differ between sources. Summer hours of 10:00–21:00 (Tuesdays until 23:00, closed Sundays) are listed in one place. Another listing gives Monday to Saturday 10:00–13:00 plus an evening block, and by appointment from October to April. Call +385 52 852 477 or email [email protected] before driving up outside July and August. Standard entry is a few euros. The museum's guided service is priced separately (€25 in the standard season, €30 in summer 2026, VAT excluded, so check current rates).
The museum also manages the Collection of Sacred Art in the Church of St Mary of Consolation and the memorial rooms for Matija Vlačić Ilirik, the Protestant reformer born in Labin in 1520.
03Old Town: Porta Sanfior, Stari Trg and the Loggia
Labin was once a walled town. The main entrance is Porta Sanfior, a 16th-century gate with a Venetian lion carved in the arch and the town coat of arms above it. Beyond it, cobbled lanes climb to Stari trg, the main square.
The Loggia on the square dates to 1550 and is one of the best-preserved buildings of its type in Istria. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands nearby, and baroque palaces such as Negri Palace line the streets. The whole walk from gate to far end takes about 30 to 45 minutes without stops, but plan 90 minutes if you enter galleries. Many studios and small galleries operate in the old town, especially in summer, and Labin Art Republika is the best-known art event.
04Fortica Viewpoint
Fortica sits at the far edge of the old town and gives the widest view in town. On a clear day it covers the Raša valley, Rabac below, the Kvarner coast and the rocky outline of Cres. It costs nothing and takes about five minutes from the main square. Late afternoon light is best, and the wind can be strong, so bring a light layer outside midsummer.
05Dubrova Sculpture Park
Dubrova Park lies slightly north of the centre. About 70 limestone sculptures stand among trees and meadow. The park is open 24 hours and entry is free. It takes 45 to 60 minutes to walk through at an easy pace. Wear closed shoes, since paths are uneven.
06Rabac Beaches
Rabac is a former fishing village and now the main resort on this coast, 5 km south of the old town. The beaches are mostly pebble and shingle with clear water and pine shade.
- Girandella
- the largest and most developed, with services and a promenade. It suits families.
- Maslinica
- quieter, reached along the coastal path.
- Lanterna
- smaller, backed by pines.
Bring water shoes, because pebbles are hard on bare feet. Rabac fills up in July and August, and parking near the harbour is tight. Arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 in peak season.
07Seasonal Events
The Labin Art Republika festival fills the old town with art in summer.
08Suggested One-Day Route
- 09:30: Park at the lower edge of the old town and walk up through Porta Sanfior.
- 10:00: Museum and mine tunnel.
- 11:30: Stari trg, the Loggia and the church.
- 12:30: Fortica for the view, then lunch in the old town.
- 14:30: Drive or taxi down to Rabac for a swim at Girandella or Maslinica.
- Optional: Dubrova Park on the way, or at the end of the day.
09Opinion: What to Skip
Skip any plan that treats Labin as a beach base. The old town and the tunnel are the reason to come. Sleep in or near the old town, and use Rabac for swimming only. Midsummer in Rabac means crowds and slow parking, whereas the hilltop stays quiet and several degrees cooler in the evening.
10Practical Tips
- Wear flat, grippy shoes. The old-town cobbles are polished and slippery when wet.
- Parking is easier in the lower new town, so leave the car there and walk up.
- Summer evenings in the old town are the best time to see the lit squares and galleries.
- Carry some cash for small purchases in the old town.
- Best months are April to October. Sea swimming is most comfortable from June to September.
