01When Is the Best Time to Visit Lopud?
September is the single best month for most visitors, with late May to mid-June a close second. Lopud is a small, car-free Elaphiti island about 10 km northwest of Dubrovnik. Its appeal depends on swimming, a working restaurant scene and a quiet atmosphere. Those three things line up in the shoulder seasons and not at the extremes of the year.
02The Verdict by Season
Shoulder Season (Late May–June, September): Best Overall
This is the balanced choice. Restaurants and beach services are open, the sea is pleasant for swimming, and the island feels relaxed without being empty. Accommodation is cheaper than in July and August, and sunbed spots on Šunj beach are easy to get.
September has a slight edge over June. The sea has stored a summer of heat, and the day-trip groups from Dubrovnik thin out. Ferry fares drop to the off-season rate after the high-fare period ends (27 September in 2026).
Peak Summer (July–August): Best Only If Swimming Is the Only Goal
This is the most reliable period for heat and a fully staffed island. It is also when the island is most crowded and most expensive. Day-trippers from Dubrovnik arrive on the morning ferries and on tour boats, and rooms book out early. Expect the highest prices of the year for accommodation and a busier Šunj beach between roughly 11:00 and 16:00.
The ferry timetable also changes in summer. Departure times on line 807 differ between the summer schedule and the rest of the year, so check the current timetable on jadrolinija.hr.
Off-Season (October–April): Quiet, but Limited
Ferries run all year, but restaurants, accommodation and seasonal services are more limited from late autumn through early spring. This period suits walkers, photographers and people who want solitude. It does not suit anyone planning a beach holiday. The sea is cold, and several konobas and rental services close.
03Cost: What Timing Changes
Timing affects your budget in two ways: the ferry fare and the cost of a bed.
- Jadrolinija line 807, Dubrovnik–Lopud, adult one way: €3.40 off-season and €5.40 in the high-fare period (29 May–27 September in 2026). Children aged 3–12 pay €1.90.
- Line 831 (the year-round car ferry) is slightly cheaper: €3.20 off-season and €5.10 seasonal.
- A Lopud day trip from Dubrovnik costs about €45–75 per person, including a return ferry (€6.80–10.80), lunch (€12–22), a sunbed (€10–15) and a buggy ride to Šunj (about €3 each way).
Fares for 2027 are not yet confirmed, so check Jadrolinija tariffs before booking. The pattern of cheaper off-season fares and a high-fare period from late May to late September is likely to stay.
04Which Month Fits Which Traveler?
| Traveler | Best window |
|---|---|
| Couples and relaxed beach stays | Late May–mid June, or September |
| Families with school-holiday limits | Late June or early September if possible; otherwise July |
| Budget travelers | Early–mid June or late September, after the high-fare period ends |
| Walkers and quiet seekers | April or October |
| Guaranteed hot, calm sea | Late July–August |
05Local Tips on Timing
- Day trip or overnight
- Lopud is much better as an overnight stay. Day-trippers get roughly four to five hours on the island. After the last day-tripper sailing leaves, the village is quiet and the beach is almost empty.
- Ferry times
- Arrive at Gruž port at least 45 minutes before sailing. Typical crossing time is about 55 minutes.
- Opinion
- Booking Lopud in mid-August is a mistake for anyone who wants a quiet island. The ferry, the beach and the few restaurants are all stretched at once, and the same trip in the second half of September costs less and feels like a different place.
- Check last sailings
- The last departure from Lopud to Dubrovnik is around 18:10 on the summer timetable. If you plan to eat dinner on the island on a day trip, confirm the return time first.
- Beach access
- Šunj is the island's best-known sandy bay. A short buggy ride or a walk across the island reaches it from the village.
06Weather, Crowds and Price: How They Trade Off
No month wins on all three. Peak summer wins on weather certainty but loses on crowds and price. Winter wins on crowds and price but loses on weather and services. Late May–June and September are the only periods that score well on all three, which is why they are the default recommendation. For a month-by-month breakdown of temperatures or visitor numbers, see the separate weather and crowd guides.
