01Best Beaches in Lovran
Lovran's coast is mostly pebble, gravel and concrete platforms. There is very little sand. All the main beaches are free to enter. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available only at some of them, and the sea is typically around 23°C at the height of summer.
Medveja Beach: best overall
Medveja is a large pebble beach covering about 44,000 m². It lies roughly 2 km south of Lovran's centre, next to a small fishing harbour. It has restaurants, sports facilities and a campsite behind it. Water entry is gradual, which suits children. This is the beach to choose if you want one full beach day.
Peharovo Beach: quietest in town
Peharovo is on the western side of Lovran, below the Lungomare promenade. It is a pebble beach and is smaller and calmer than Kvarner. Access is by steps down from the promenade. Bring water and snacks, because facilities are limited.
Kvarner Beach: easiest for families
Kvarner is the main town beach. It is a mix of gravel and concrete slabs, about 900 m from the old town. It has a snack bar, a caffe bar, changing cabins, natural shade, a children's playground and access for people with disabilities. Several smaller beaches (Excelsior, Bristol, Sveti Juraj) lie within 200–600 m, so the shoreline is crowded in July and August.
Ičići Beach: best maintained
Ičići sits about 4 km north of Lovran, between the old harbour and the ACI marina. It has held a Blue Flag for more than a decade, and it is among the best-kept beaches in Croatia. Many visitors reach it on foot along the Lungomare, then return by local bus.
Other options
- Ika
- a small beach roughly 1 km from Kvarner, reached on the promenade.
- Lovran istok
- a dog-friendly beach about 400 m from Kvarner.
- Mošćenička Draga
- a pebble beach roughly 6 km south, reachable by bus or car.
02Which Beach Is Best for Your Trip?
- Families with small children
- Medveja or Kvarner.
- Quiet swimming
- Peharovo, or the small concrete platforms along the Lungomare.
- Cleanest, most organised beach
- Ičići.
- Dogs
- Lovran istok.
Bring water shoes. Pebbles and concrete edges are hard on bare feet, and rocky entries can be slippery.
03Beachfront Apartments in Lovran
True waterfront apartments are limited because the Lungomare and the main road run along the shore. Most properties are on the hillside above and have sea views. A "beachfront" label on booking platforms often means within a short walk of the sea. Check the exact distance before booking.
Price ranges in season
- Budget studios and small apartments
- about €60–80 per night. Examples include apartments with 4 guests listed from roughly €60–67.
- Mid-range beachfront apartments
- about €90–115 per night. Apartment Villa Lidija and Apartments Atlanta fall here. Apartments Atlanta has a pool and a position in front of the beach.
- Pool apartments
- Apartments Villa Krasa starts at around €90 and has a 9.6/10 guest score.
- Premium
- Apartments Belvedere, run by Liburnia Hotels & Villas, costs around €250 per night. It has sea views and a seasonal infinity pool, but it is not on the beach. The Lungomare is about 2 km away, and the old town about 1.8 km.
Average rates across all Lovran apartments run roughly €150–190 per night in summer. Beachfront rentals average higher, around €230–260 per night.
What to check before booking
- Distance to the sea. Ask whether there is a road or the Lungomare between the apartment and the water.
- Stairs. Lovran is built on a slope. Many apartments have steep access.
- Parking. The old town is tight for cars, and free parking is limited in summer.
- Air conditioning. July and August are hot, so confirm it is included.
- Tourist tax. A small per-person nightly local tax is added to the price, usually under €2 per adult.
04Best Time to Visit
July and August have the warmest sea and the biggest crowds. June and September are the better balance, with warm water, lower prices and easier parking. Apartment rates in the shoulder months are often 20–30% below peak.
05Getting Around
The Lungomare (Franz Joseph I Promenade) is a seaside path of about 12 km from Volosko through Opatija, Ičići and Ika to Lovran. Walking from Lovran to Medveja takes about 30–40 minutes. Walking from Lovran to Ičići takes about an hour. Opatija is around 12 km by road, and Rijeka airport, on the island of Krk, is about an hour's drive away.
06Local Tips
- Go early at Kvarner.
- Space on the slabs is gone by 10:00 in August.
- Use the small unnamed platforms.
- Many stretches of the Lungomare have concrete swimming spots with ladders. Several are empty even in peak season.
- Skip Kvarner for serious swimming.
- The beach is convenient but crowded and hard underfoot. Spend the same morning at Medveja, which has more space and clearer water.
- Eat in the old town, not on the beach.
- Lovran has a market and a compact old town for lunch and dinner. Beach snack bars are fine for drinks but cost more.
- Seasonal chestnut and cherry produce.
- Lovran is known for marrons (chestnuts) in autumn, with a festival in October. It is a good time for a low-season visit.
07Final Recommendation
Book an apartment between Lovran's centre and Medveja. This puts you within 2 km of the best beach and within walking distance of the old town. For the lowest price, take a hillside apartment with a sea view and walk down to the Lungomare. For comfort in summer, choose one with a pool and air conditioning.
