01How Island Hopping Works from Novi Vinodolski

Novi Vinodolski sits on the Vinodol coast of the Kvarner Bay, on the mainland. The town has a harbour for local boats and excursions, but no scheduled car or passenger ferry to the islands. Visitors reach the islands by driving to a nearby ferry port or by crossing the Krk Bridge, which links the mainland to Krk with no ferry at all.

Three islands are realistic targets: Krk (road access), Cres (via Valbiska–Merag) and Rab (via Stinica–Mišnjak, Valbiska–Lopar, or catamaran). A rental car is the most practical way to do this, and it is the only sensible way to reach Valbiska and Stinica on a tight schedule.

02Best Route: Krk, Cres and Rab in One Trip

The common loop for a base in Novi Vinodolski runs as follows.

  1. Krk (day 1). Cross the bridge and explore the island by road. Krk town, Vrbnik and Baška are the main stops.
  2. Cres (day 2). Drive to Valbiska on Krk's east side, take the car ferry to Merag, then continue to Cres town or Beli.
  3. Rab (day 3). Go south to Stinica or return to Valbiska, then cross to Rab.

This works in 3 to 5 days. A shorter option is a single day on Krk plus one island by ferry. Trying to fit all three islands into two days leaves most of the time on the road and in ferry queues.

03Ferry Routes and 2026 Prices

Valbiska (Krk) to Merag (Cres)

Jadrolinija runs this car ferry (line 332) with a crossing time of 25 minutes. A foot passenger ticket costs €4.40 and a child aged 3–12 pays €2.20. A car up to 5 m long and 2 m high costs €20.70. Departures run from early morning until late at night, with the first sailing from Valbiska around 05:45, so no advance planning is needed outside peak summer. Valbiska is roughly 65 km from Novi Vinodolski, about an hour's drive.

Valbiska (Krk) to Lopar (Rab)

Line 338 sails from Valbiska to Lopar in about 1h 20m, with departures including 07:45, 11:45, 16:00 and 20:30 in the timetable. A foot passenger fare is about €6.20. Lopar is on the north tip of Rab, next to the sandy Rajska Plaža (Paradise Beach), which makes it the better landing for beach days. It is a longer crossing than Stinica–Mišnjak, so it suits visitors who are already on Krk.

Stinica to Mišnjak (Rab)

This is the shortest and cheapest route to Rab. Rapska Plovidba operates it. A foot passenger pays €3–4.50 depending on season. A car under 5 m costs about €12 in low season and about €15 in high season. Stinica is on the D8 coastal road south of Senj, roughly 70 km from Novi Vinodolski. Mišnjak is on the south-east of Rab, about 10 km from Rab town.

Catamarans to Rab Town

Two foot-passenger services reach Rab town directly. The Baška (Krk) to Rab catamaran takes 1h 30m and costs €15. The Senj to Rab catamaran takes 2h 15m, costs from €15, and runs June to August on 3 to 6 days a week. Both carry no cars. Senj is the closer departure point, about 45 km south of Novi Vinodolski.

05Island Highlights

Krk

Krk is the largest Croatian island and the easiest to reach. Krk town has a compact walled old centre with a Romanesque cathedral and a Frankopan castle. Vrbnik, on a cliff above the sea, is known for the white wine Žlahtina. Baška has a 1.8 km pebble beach below the Velebit-facing hills and is the departure point for the Rab catamaran.

Cres

Cres is a quieter, rocky island with sheep pastures and stone walls. Cres town has a Venetian-style harbour. Beli is a hill village in the north, and Lubenice is a hilltop settlement above a pebble beach. The island's roads are narrow and winding, so allow plenty of time for the drive to Cres town and more to go further south.

Rab

Rab town is known for its four bell towers on a narrow peninsula, a medieval old town and a harbour front lined with restaurants. Lopar has the sandy beaches, shallow and suited to families. The Kalifront peninsula offers a quiet walk, and the Dundo forest, a protected holm oak park, is on the Kamporska side.

06Local Insider Tips

  • Arrive at Valbiska at least 60 minutes before departure in July and August. Queues at the ferry port can run to hours on weekends. Cars are loaded in order of arrival.
  • Choose Stinica–Mišnjak if you want the cheapest, shortest crossing to Rab. Choose Valbiska–Lopar only when you are already on Krk and want the Lopar beaches.
  • Day trips to Cres from Novi Vinodolski are not worth it. The drive plus ferry plus the narrow island roads use most of a day. Stay a night on Cres or skip it.
  • Foot passengers should consider the Baška–Rab catamaran. It avoids car costs and runs only in the main season, so check the day's timetable first.
  • Weather can cancel sailings. The Kvarner Bay is known for the bura wind, which can suspend ferry services, especially the catamarans. Keep one flexible day in the itinerary.
  • Use the Krk Bridge for Krk and save the ferry budget. Krk needs no ferry ticket, and the road around the island costs only fuel.

07When to Go

The best months for island hopping from Novi Vinodolski are June and September. Ferries run on fuller schedules than in spring or autumn, queues are shorter than in July and August, and the sea is warm. High-season ferry fares apply from the summer period, and the summer-only catamaran from Senj runs June to August. In winter, car ferries still operate but with fewer departures.

08Practical Planning

Tickets
Buy at the port ticket office or online through Jadrolinija. Online booking is useful for the Rab lines in summer.
Vehicle size
Cars over 5 m long or 2 m high pay a higher fare. On the Valbiska–Merag line, that rate is €31.80.
Passport
Croatia is in the Schengen Area, so no border checks apply between the islands and the mainland.
Driving
Island roads are narrow and winding. Plan an average of 40 km/h on Cres and Rab.
Timetables
Departure times change between seasons. Confirm the date before travel.

09Verdict

For most visitors, Krk plus Rab is the best pairing. Both are easy to reach, the ferry costs are low, and the beaches, old towns and food cover most of what the area offers. Cres is better for a longer stay, not a day trip.
