01Why Podgora Works for Families

Podgora is a small resort on the Makarska Riviera, located 9 km from Makarska at the foot of the Biokovo mountains. The Riviera is a 60 km strip of pebble beaches, and the entry into the water at Podgora is shallow and gradual. That makes it easier for toddlers and young swimmers than the steeper coves elsewhere on the coast.

The village is compact. The main beach is lined with cafés and restaurants, the promenade is flat and shaded by palms and pines, and a local bus runs along the coast to Makarska and Tučepi. Podgora is also cheaper and quieter than Makarska, and it still has enough restaurants and ice cream shops that families do not need a car for daily life.

02Best Areas to Stay in Podgora with Kids

Town centre and main beach

The centre is the best choice for families with strollers or children under 6. Shops, pharmacies, restaurants and the beach are all within 5 minutes on foot. Evenings are lively but not loud.

ÄŚaklje bay

ÄŚaklje is a quieter bay on the Podgora shoreline with apartments right beside the sea, such as Letica Apartments. It suits families who want a calm pebble beach and a few waterfront restaurants rather than a busy centre.

Upper Podgora (Stara Podgora)

The old village sits on the hillside above the coast. It offers stone houses and views, but access involves steps and slopes, and the sea is a drive or a long walk away. Skip it if you travel with a stroller or a toddler.

03Family-Friendly Apartments in Podgora

Self-catering is the sensible format for families here. A kitchen lets you cook early dinners for small children, and a balcony gives parents somewhere to sit once kids are asleep.

  • Apartments Coast 27: rated 9.2/10 across 159 reviews, with guests regularly mentioning stays with a baby and a 6-year-old.
  • Apartments and Rooms Nikša and Apartmani Niko: both rated 9.7/10, with balcony views of the sea and Biokovo.
  • Apartments Tanja: 200 m from the beach, from about €97 per night in high season, with air conditioning.
  • Apartments Damjan: studio and two-to-four-person units 50 m from the sea, with parking and a terrace.
  • Letica Apartments: modern units directly beside the sea in ÄŚaklje.

For families of four or five, look for two-bedroom units, since a single living-room bed is tight for children over 8. Air conditioning is essential from late June to early September, when daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C. Confirm parking when booking, because spaces in the centre fill early in July and August.

04Things to Do with Kids in Podgora

Beaches and swimming

The main Podgora beach has shallow entry, nearby cafés and toilets, which makes it the easiest option for children. Pack water shoes (about €8–12 in local shops), because pebbles are hot at midday and sharp on bare feet. Morning is the best time for toddlers, since shade is limited on the beach itself.

Promenade and playgrounds

The waterfront promenade has playgrounds near the seafront and is flat enough for scooters and strollers. Walk it at 18:00–20:00, when temperatures drop and the cafés fill.

Water sports

Watersport centres along the shoreline rent stand-up paddleboards and offer boat rides. Paddleboarding in the morning is calm, as the sea is usually flat before the afternoon breeze.

Short hikes

Trails run through pine forests and olive groves above the village toward the Biokovo foothills. Keep walks under 1–2 hours with children and start before 10:00 in summer.

05Day Trips from Podgora

Biokovo Skywalk

The Biokovo Nature Park ticket costs around €10 per adult in April–May and October, and €15 in June–September. Children under 7 enter free, and the ticket covers the road and the Skywalk. The road is narrow with sharp turns, and the temperature at the top is much cooler than at the coast, so bring a jacket. Families with children prone to car sickness should think twice. This is a drive best done in the morning.

Aquapark Makarska

The aquapark is in Makarska on Put CvitaÄŤke, around 9 km from Podgora. It is the closest option for water slides when children outgrow the pebble beach. Check current ticket prices and opening dates with the park directly, since they change by season.

Makarska town

Makarska has a long town beach with plenty of facilities and cafés, which is a good choice for families with children. The promenade and the old centre make an easy half-day trip by bus or car.

Island boat trips

Speedboat tours from Makarska visit Brač, Hvar and a blue lagoon, typically for €70–90 per adult. Skip the full-day speedboat trips with children under 6. The rides are fast and bumpy, and the day is long. A calmer boat on a shorter route suits small children far better.

06Insider Tips for Families

  • Book by February for July and August. The best-rated family apartments sell out first.
  • Shop for groceries in the morning, before the heat. Supermarkets in Podgora are small but stocked with the basics.
  • Eat early. Restaurants serve dinner from around 18:00, and children's portions or simple pasta and grilled fish are standard.
  • Choose June or September for lower prices, warm water and fewer crowds.
  • Bring beach shade. A small umbrella or pop-up tent is worth carrying, because natural shade on the main beach is limited.

07Getting There

Podgora is roughly 60 km from Split and about 1 hour by car along the coast road. Split Airport is the nearest major airport, and coastal buses link Split with Makarska and Podgora. Cars are useful for Biokovo and for beach hopping, but they are not essential for a beach-focused stay.
