01Why Ston Works for Couples
Ston sits at the base of the Pelješac Peninsula, about 58 km northwest of Dubrovnik, a drive of roughly one hour. The town has no nightclub scene and no cruise-ship crowds. What it has is a 14th-century fortification system, working salt pans, and the oyster beds of Mali Ston Bay. Couples who like slow days, food and walking get the most from it. Couples who want beach clubs and nightlife should pick Dubrovnik or Hvar instead.
Ston and Mali Ston are two separate settlements a few kilometres apart by road. The walls connect them over the hill. Dubrovnik founded both towns after acquiring Pelješac in 1333.
02Walk the Walls of Ston Together
The walls are the main activity. About 5.5 km of the original 7 km survives, and they climb steeply over the hill between Ston and Mali Ston. Adult tickets cost €10, children pay a reduced fare, and the same ticket covers the Veliki Kaštio fortress. Dubrovnik's city walls cost €40 for adults in 2026, so Ston is much cheaper.
Hours: Summer hours run from 08:00 to roughly 18:30 (April to May and September), to 19:30 in June and July. October closes earlier, around 17:30–18:00. Winter hours (November to March) are shorter, roughly 09:00 to 15:00. Check current times before going.
Route: Gate A, to the left of the Ston bus stop, leads to the full climb toward Mali Ston. Gate C is the shorter option. The steps are narrow and uneven. Wear proper shoes, not sandals.
Insider tip: Start at 08:00. By midday in July and August the exposed stone gets very hot, and the climb is unpleasant. Finish the walk in Mali Ston and have lunch there.
03Oyster Dinner in Mali Ston
Mali Ston Bay produces the oysters Croatia is known for. Two restaurants sit on the harbour within about 100 m of each other.
- Bota Šare
- is the more casual, family-run option. It occupies a medieval salt-storage building. Oysters come opened at the table with lemon.
- Kapetanova kuća
- has a more formal feel, a broader seafood menu and a large Pelješac wine list. It suits couples where one partner does not eat oysters.
Both fill up in July and August, so book ahead. Away from peak season, a table at sunset on the water is easy to get.
In Ston town, Barba Ston and Stagnum are reliable alternatives with a quieter, local feel.
Opinion: Booking both Mali Ston restaurants for one trip is unnecessary. The difference is atmosphere, not quality, so pick one and spend the second evening in Ston town instead.
04Salt Pans and Sunset Walks
The Ston salt pans, among the oldest in Europe, lie just outside town. Salt is still harvested here by hand, mostly in summer. A visit is free to walk around, and the flat paths suit an easy evening stroll. The view of the pans from the wall is better than from ground level, so do the wall first.
In Mali Ston, the harbour promenade is the best sunset spot. It takes about 10 minutes to walk end to end.
05Wine Tasting on Pelješac
Pelješac is Croatia's best-known red wine region, built around Plavac Mali. The Dingač and Postup appellations are on the steep southern slopes, about 45 to 60 minutes from Ston by car. Closer to Ston, family wineries such as Miloš in Ponikve offer tastings, usually by appointment. Only one partner can drive, so plan tastings around a designated driver or a private transfer.
06Where to Stay
Mali Ston has small waterfront guesthouses and family-run rooms overlooking the bay. It is the quieter, more romantic base and puts you next to the oyster restaurants. Ston town has more rooms and is closer to the bus stop and walls. Book summer stays well ahead, as the number of rooms in both villages is limited.
07Best Time to Visit
- March
- The annual Oyster Festival brings tastings and live music.
- May and June
- Warm weather, long daylight, fewer crowds.
- September and early October
- Warm sea, calmer restaurants.
- July and August
- Hot walls, full restaurants, and the hardest bookings.
08Getting There
By car from Dubrovnik, take the D8 north, a trip of about 58 km. Buses run from Dubrovnik, but a car lets you reach wineries and the Mali Ston waterfront more easily.
