01What Makes Tučepi Work for Teenagers
Tučepi is a low-key resort village on the Makarska Riviera with a long pine-backed pebble beach and a seafront promenade. The backdrop is the Biokovo mountain range, which rises to over 1,700 m. Teenagers get more independence here than in a big city. The promenade is flat, mostly car-free and lit in the evening, so 14–17-year-olds can walk to cafés and the beach on their own.
The village is quiet at night. Teens who want more nightlife and shopping can reach Makarska, about 5 km north, by local bus, taxi, or a 1-hour walk along the coast. Makarska has a lively waterfront with bars, ice cream shops and a busy evening scene in July and August.
02Best Activities for Teens in Tučepi
Water Sports on the Beach
Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, jet skis and banana boats are rented along the beach. Beginner SUP lessons suit 12 and over without prior experience. Double kayaks and SUP boards typically cost €15–30 for two hours. Snorkelling gear is cheap, and the water beside the rocky edges of the bay has fish and sea urchins, so water shoes are worth packing.
Kayak and Snorkel Tours
Guided kayak tours run along the coast for about 4 hours, with swim and snorkel stops. They require a minimum of two people and are rated 5.0 out of 5 on major booking platforms. Butterfly Diving & Sailing Makarska operates kayak, SUP, snorkelling and diving options from Tučepi. A teenager can start a CMAS beginner scuba course there, usually from age 10–12 with an instructor.
Biokovo Skywalk
The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway projecting about 11 m from a cliff at 1,228 m above sea level. Entry is through Biokovo Nature Park and costs €10 in April–May and October and €15 in June–September. Children under 7 enter free. Tickets are sold online through the park, and booking ahead is recommended in July and August.
The road up is narrow with blind bends and takes about 45 minutes from the village. Drivers need to be confident on mountain roads. Families who are not should book a tuk-tuk, cabrio or minibus tour (from about €60 per person), which removes the driving. An evening tour (17:30–21:00) gives cooler temperatures and sunset light, and is the better choice in July and August, when midday heat on the mountain is strong.
Island Boat Trips
Speedboat tours leave from Makarska and visit Brač, Hvar and the Blue Lagoon, with cave and swim stops. They cost from about €80–90 per person and last around 5 hours. Longer boat tours with lunch on board take 9 hours and cost from about €70–75. The speedboat is better for teens because it covers more ground and leaves time for swimming.
Zipline, Cycling and Hiking
Tučepi Zipline is above the village and suits teens who want an adrenaline option. Cycling the coastal route to Podgora or Makarska is flat and takes 20–30 minutes each way, and bikes are rented in the village for around €10–15 per day. For hiking, Biokovo offers the Vošac viewpoint, about 30 minutes on foot from the parking area, and Sveti Jure, the park's highest peak, reached by road.
03Where to Stay with Teenagers
The Bluesun hotels in Tučepi (including Alga, Jadran and Neptun) are on or near the beach and offer family rooms and half-board, which suits teens with big appetites. Private apartments along the promenade give more space and a kitchen, and typically cost €80–150 per night in peak season. Apartments with two bedrooms are better than a single large family room once children are over 13, since privacy matters.
04Costs for a Family of Four
A typical summer day with beach time, one paid activity and meals costs €120–200. Skywalk entry for four is €40–60 in summer. A speedboat day for four runs about €320–360. Pizza and pasta in a restaurant cost €9–14 per main, and grilled fish is €18–30.
05Getting There
Split Airport is about 70–75 km away, roughly 1 hour by car or transfer. Dubrovnik Airport is about 130 km away. A rental car is useful for the Skywalk, but not required for the beach, the promenade or Makarska.
06Local Tips
- Swim and sunbathe before 11:00 or after 16:00 in July and August, when the pebble beach is hot and crowded.
- Skip the Skywalk at midday in summer. The queue and heat are not worth it, and the evening slot is better.
- Water shoes are necessary on the pebbles. Teens often forget them.
- Book speedboat tours 1–2 days ahead in peak season.
- The best months are June and September: warm sea, fewer crowds and lower prices than July–August.
- Pay for the Skywalk online in advance, since the park manages road access on busy days.
07Is Tučepi Better Than Makarska for Teens?
For teens aged 12–15, Tučepi is the better base: calmer, safer and just as close to the sea. For 16–18-year-olds who want clubs and a busier scene, Makarska is more appealing, and Tučepi works as a quieter option 5 km away.
