01What Is Tučepi and Where Is It?

Tučepi is a village on the Makarska Riviera in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. It lies about 5 km southeast of Makarska, with the Biokovo Nature Park rising directly behind it. The coastline is a long strip of pebble beaches backed by pine trees, hotels, apartments and a small harbour.

The village is quieter and more family-oriented than Makarska. There is no big nightlife scene. Evenings are for the promenade, dinner and ice cream, and Makarska's bars are a short drive or bus ride away.

02How to Get to Tučepi

By air

Split Airport is the closest major airport, roughly 80 km northwest. Dubrovnik Airport is about 130 km southeast. Transfers from Split take around 1 hour 15 minutes by road. Private transfers are the easiest option for families, and the alternative is a bus to Makarska followed by a short taxi.

By bus and car

Intercity buses on the coastal route stop at Makarska and along the main road through the Riviera. Tučepi is on the D8 coastal road, so the bus is workable if your accommodation is near the main road. A rental car costs more but opens up beaches, viewpoints and day trips. Skip the car if you plan to stay only in the beachfront strip and join organised excursions.

03Best Time to Visit Tučepi

June
Warm sea, fewer crowds, lower prices.
July-August
Peak heat, highest prices, full beaches and busy roads.
September
Often the best month, with warm sea and calmer streets.
May and October
Good for hiking in Biokovo, but swimming is cooler and some seasonal businesses close.

Most travelers overestimate the appeal of August. Early to mid-September gives the same swimming weather with noticeably less queueing for parking, tables and loungers.

04Beaches in Tučepi

The beaches are pebble and shingle with clear water. Most have showers, toilets and lifeguards in season, and cafés or beach bars behind them.

Plaža Slatina
A central beach with beach bars, showers, lifeguards and an inflatable water park. Good for families.
Kraj
A beach at the eastern end of the village with sun loungers, umbrellas and cafés.
Plaža Kamena
A popular beach in the western part of the village, with a high visitor rating of about 4.7 out of 5.

Access to the beaches is free. Sun loungers and umbrellas are paid separately, usually around €10 to €20 per set per day in high season, depending on the beach and the month. Bring water shoes, since the pebbles are hot and sharp in July and August.

05Where to Stay in Tučepi

The main choice is between a hotel and a private apartment.

Resort hotels
Bluesun runs several in the village, including Hotel Jadran, Hotel Alga and Holiday Village Afrodita. These suit families who want pools, half-board and a beachfront setting.
Smaller hotels
Hotel Laurentum, Hotel Villa Marija and Hotel Tamaris are well rated and mid-range.
Apartments
Private apartments are the best value, from about €50 per night for a studio in the shoulder season to €120 or more for a sea-view apartment in August.

Choose accommodation by the sea or by the pedestrian promenade if you do not have a car. The upper part of the village, on the hillside above the main road, has the best views but involves steep walks back after dinner.

06Top Things to Do in Tučepi

Biokovo Skywalk and Vošac

The Biokovo Skywalk is a curved glass-floored walkway at 1,228 m on Ravna Vlaška, above the village. The park entrance has a Tučepi postcode, so this is the closest major attraction. Entry costs €10 from April to May and from mid-September to October, and €15 from June to mid-September.

Tickets are sold online, and entry is limited to timed vehicle slots of around 20 cars per hour. Arrive at reception about 5 minutes before the slot. The drive from the entrance to the Skywalk takes about 30 minutes on a narrow road with passing bays.

For drivers uneasy on mountain roads, a guided tour is the better option, at roughly €50 to €80 depending on length and pickup. The Skywalk platform needs only about 10 to 15 minutes. The better use of time is continuing to Vošac (1,422 m), reached by a hike of roughly 40 minutes from the road, with wider views over the Riviera and the islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula.

Boat trips and island days

Day trips depart from Tučepi and Makarska. A two-islands boat trip with lunch costs from about €50 to €85. Half-day Hvar trips and private boats cost more. Ask whether the fee includes drinks and the Blue Lagoon stop before paying.

Water sports and diving

Stand-up paddle tours cost about €55 for a small group. Diving centres in the village offer try-dive sessions. Parasailing and kayaking are available at larger beaches.

The old hamlets

The older stone houses and the Kaštelet area above the coast give a view of how the village looked before tourism. Allow about an hour.
