01Best Area to Stay in Tučepi With Kids
Tučepi is a village of about 2,000 residents on the Makarska Riviera, around 5 km southeast of Makarska. The beach and promenade run roughly 4 km along the coast, and the terrain beside the water is flat. That makes it workable for strollers, scooters and small bikes.
The village has three zones that matter for families:
- Centre and harbour
- Cafés, shops, a bakery and ice cream are within a few minutes' walk. It is the liveliest area and gets noisy in July and August.
- Western part (Kamena and Dračevac side)
- Quieter, closer to Makarska. Suitable for families who want early bedtimes.
- Eastern part (Slatina side)
- Fewer people, long beach stretches, a bit further from shops.
Tip: Avoid the upper village (Gornji Tučepi) with small children unless a car is available. The hill is steep, and the walk down to the sea is easy but the walk back is not.
02Family-Friendly Apartments in Tučepi
Apartments are a better fit than hotels for most families. A kitchen allows early dinners, a separate bedroom makes naps possible, and a washing machine handles sandy clothes.
What to check before booking
- Distance to the water: Under 150 m is realistic in Tučepi. Many properties are first or second row.
- Air conditioning: Essential from late June to early September, when daytime highs often pass 30°C.
- Balcony or terrace: Gives parents an evening spot once children sleep.
- Parking: Many apartments include it, and the centre fills up by 10:00 in peak season.
- Pool: Several apartment houses in Gornji Tučepi have one. Most sit uphill from the sea, so check the walking distance.
- Ground floor or lift: Stairs with a stroller and beach bags get tiring.
Named options
Apartments Estera sit in the quiet part of Tučepi, a few steps from Kamena Beach and 100 m from Dračevac Beach. They offer private parking, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Apartments Vice are about 80 m from the beach and target families with small children. Mitan apartman is a renovated beachfront unit near Slatina Beach with a balcony and free parking. Apartments Viola have a garden and terrace.
For a hotel with organised children's entertainment, Bluesun Hotel Neptun is placed directly on the beach and runs an animation program for kids.
Seasonal prices vary widely. Expect the highest rates from mid-July to late August. June and September give lower rates and sea temperatures that still suit swimming.
03Beaches for Children
Tučepi's beaches are mostly fine pebble, with gradual entry into the water. The sea is clear and calm on most days.
- Kamena Beach
- Close to the western apartments, good for a short walk with toddlers.
- Dračevac Beach
- Quieter and a few minutes further along.
- Slatina Beach
- Eastern end, with more room to spread out.
- Central beach
- Water sports, snack bars and the most people.
Pack water shoes for every child. Pebbles are comfortable to sit on, but hot stones and the occasional sea urchin near rocks make bare feet a poor idea. Shade is limited on parts of the beach, so bring an umbrella or a pop-up tent for under-fives.
04Things to Do With Kids in Tučepi
Promenade walks and playgrounds
The seafront promenade is shaded by pines in sections and lined with cafés. It works well for evening walks, scooter rides and ice cream. Bike rental is available in the village.
Water sports
The central beach offers paddle boards, pedal boats and banana-boat rides in season. Minimum age for motorised rides is usually around 5–6, but operators set their own rules.
Biokovo Skywalk (ages 7+)
The glass-floored Skywalk sits at 1,228 m inside Biokovo Nature Park, directly above Tučepi. The ticket costs €10 in April–May and October, and €15 in June–September per adult. Children under 7 enter free. Tickets are sold online with timed entry, so book ahead for summer. The Skywalk closes from November until spring, so it is not an option in the off-season.
The road up has tight hairpins, takes 45–60 minutes each way and carries a separate vehicle fee of roughly €10–15. Skip it with children under four. Long switchback drives and car sickness are a poor combination, and the walkway itself holds a toddler's interest for about five minutes. For ages 7 and up it is worth the effort. Go early, because it is 10–15°C cooler on top than at sea level.
Day trips
- Makarska (5 km)
- Seafront, a long promenade and a larger choice of restaurants. A taxi or local bus covers the distance in about 10 minutes.
- Boat excursions
- Half-day boat trips run from the Tučepi and Makarska area, typically with swim stops.
- Brela and Baška Voda
- Beaches to the northwest, reachable by car in 20–30 minutes.
05Practical Tips for Families
- Best months
- June and September give the best mix of warm sea and fewer crowds.
- Currency
- Croatia uses the euro. Many small beach kiosks prefer cash.
- Food
- A children's pizza or pasta in a village restaurant usually costs €7–10. Self-catering saves a lot over a week.
- Cars
- A car is useful for Biokovo and day trips but not needed for beach days.
- Sun
- Midday sun from 12:00–16:00 is strong. Plan the beach for mornings and after 17:00.
06Is Tučepi Better Than Makarska for Families?
Tučepi is quieter, has more space on the beach and is less crowded at night. Makarska has more shops, playgrounds and evening entertainment. For children under 10, Tučepi is the easier base, with Makarska as a short trip away.
