01Is There a Beach in Varaždin?

Varaždin lies in northern Croatia, on the Drava river, about 80 km from Zagreb. The Adriatic coast is more than 200 km away. The only real swimming beach in the city area is Aquacity, a lake locals call "Varaždinsko more" (Varaždin Sea).

There are no beachfront apartments in Varaždin. Anyone who wants a stay with direct sea or lake frontage has to look at the coast or at thermal resorts elsewhere. In Varaždin, the practical choice is an apartment in or near the old town and a short trip to the lake.

02Aquacity Beach: The Main Swimming Spot

Aquacity is built on Lake Motičnjak, a former gravel pit that filled with water. It sits three kilometers from the center of the baroque town. The whole complex covers about 26 hectares. Roughly 21.5 hectares of that is water and 4.5 hectares is land.

What is there:

  • A pebble and grass shoreline, with no sand
  • More than 5,000 m² of landscaped beach and green space, mostly in natural shade
  • A restaurant with a terrace seating about 550 people
  • Six tennis courts, beach volleyball, mini football and basketball courts
  • A children's playground with swings, slides and a sandbox
  • A separate fishing pond
  • Showers and a step access into the water

Cost: Entry is free, and parking is free. Expect to pay only for food, drinks and tennis court hire.

Water and conditions: The water is clear and green to turquoise, and it is cold early in the season. The lake drops off quickly in places, so small children need close supervision. Some visitors report an unpleasant smell on certain days from a nearby wastewater plant, which depends on wind direction. If the air smells off when you arrive, walk to the far side of the lake.

Naturist area: A separate naturist beach (FKK) lies about 400 m southwest of the main recreation area. It is not part of the family beach.

Best time to go: Late June to the end of August has the warmest water. Weekday mornings are quiet, and weekend afternoons are crowded with local families.

03How to Get to Aquacity from the Old Town

Car
about 5–10 minutes from the centre, in the direction of Koprivnica
Bike
about 15 minutes along flat roads, which suits Varaždin well
Walking
about 40 minutes, which is too long in summer heat

The lake is in the north-east of the city, about 1 km from the D2 state road.

04Best Areas to Stay Near the Water

No accommodation sits on the lake shore, so the choice comes down to location type.

Old Town Apartments

This is the best base. Most sights, the main square, restaurants and the bus and train stations are within walking distance. Studios and one-bedroom apartments start at about €55–€65 per night in summer. Larger or newly renovated apartments with garage parking or a terrace cost €100–€160. Free or included parking is worth checking before booking, as the old town is largely pedestrian.

Apartments in the Outer Districts

Locations to the north-east shorten the drive to Aquacity to a few minutes. They are quieter and usually cheaper, but you need a car or bike for restaurants and evenings in town.

Holiday Homes

Houses with gardens and sleeping space for 4–9 guests cost about €120–€300 per night. They suit groups who want a garden and a barbecue and plan to spend most days at the lake.

Opinion: Skip the idea of sleeping near the lake. Aquacity has no lodging and little after dark, while the old town has the dining, the architecture and the evening atmosphere. Stay in the centre and treat the lake as a half-day trip.

05Other Places to Swim Nearby

  • Gradski bazeni (city pools) and public pools operate in summer for those who prefer chlorinated water.
  • Drava river: Swimming in the river is not recommended because of currents and variable depth. Locals use the riverbanks for walking and cycling instead.
  • Slovenian thermal spas such as Terme 3000 in Moravske Toplice are a drive away across the border and work well on cold or rainy days.

06Local Tips

  1. Bring a ball and a towel; the pebbles are rough on bare feet, so water shoes help.
  2. Eat at the restaurant for simple, low-priced dishes such as pizza and fries, or return to town for a proper lunch.
  3. Arrive before 11:00 on weekends in July and August to get shade.
  4. Combine the visit with an evening in the old town. Events such as the Baroque Evenings festival in September fill apartments, so book early for that month.
  5. Dogs are generally tolerated at the lake, but check signs near the swimming area.
