01Why Varaždin Works for Couples

Varaždin is a former Croatian capital with a compact baroque centre. Everything a couple needs sits within a 15-minute walk: pastel palaces, a moated castle, green parks and café terraces. Zagreb is 79 km to the south, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car and roughly 2 hours by bus or train. The town is calm, cheap by European standards and rarely crowded outside festival weeks.

02Best Romantic Things to Do in Varaždin

Walk the Old Town and Its Moat Park

The Old Town (Stari Grad) is a Gothic-Renaissance fortress on the northern edge of the centre. It is separated from the city by embankments and moats. Its walls and towers date mostly from the 14th to 16th centuries. Since 1925 it has housed the Varaždin City Museum. The grounds are free and suit a slow evening walk. The museum is normally open Tuesday to Friday 9:00–17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 9:00–13:00. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays. The castle interior and permanent exhibition were closed for renovation through 2026, so confirm the reopening date with the city tourist board before planning around it.

Sit on King Tomislav Square

The main square is lined with pastel baroque façades, and the terraces fill up from late afternoon. Order a coffee (€2–3) or a glass of continental white wine (€3–5) and watch the town hall. The square is at its best around sunset, when the façades turn warm and the day-trippers have left.

Visit Varaždin Cemetery

This is the most unusual couples' stop in the city. The cemetery has been in use since 1773. Landscape architect Herman Haller redesigned it in 1905 as a park, with thousands of thuja trees clipped into geometric shapes, plus birch, maple and magnolia. It is protected as a horticultural monument and belongs to the European Cemeteries Route. Locals use it for walks. Keep voices low, and skip a guided tour: the paths are easy to follow alone, and the atmosphere is better in quiet, with late-afternoon light.

The baroque Sermage Palace holds the Gallery of Old and Contemporary Masters. Its old-masters section covers the 15th to 19th centuries, with a baroque focus that matches the building. It makes a good rainy-day option for two hours.

Picnic in the Parks

The green belt around the Old Town and the King Tomislav park have shaded paths, benches and small ponds. Buy bread, cheese and local cured meats at the town market and eat outdoors. A picnic for two costs about €10–15.

03Day Trips for Couples from Varaždin

Trakošćan Castle

Trakošćan is a hilltop castle above an artificial lake, about 40 km from Varaždin. A path circles the lake in roughly 30–40 minutes. Go on a weekday morning to avoid tour groups. Organised day trips from Zagreb that combine it with Varaždin cost roughly €100–125 per person, but a rental car or taxi from Varaždin is cheaper for two.

Wine Hills Around Varaždin

The hills around Varaždin are vineyard country. Small family cellars sell white wine and offer simple food in a quiet setting. Reserve by phone or ask the tourist board for current cellar listings, because many open only on set days.

Varaždinske Toplice

This thermal spa town has Roman roots and appears in a document of 1181. It works as a half-day trip for couples who want a spa afternoon.
