01Is Varaždin Good for Families with Teenagers?
Varaždin works well for teenagers who prefer a manageable, safe town over a big resort. The centre is pedestrianised, the distances are short, and the streets are bike-friendly. The city is not packed with theme parks. The best teen days combine one museum, a bike ride, a lake or festival evening, and a good meal. Most families stay 1–2 days. The town sits on the right bank of the Drava river in north-western Croatia, 79 km north of Zagreb.
02Getting to Varaždin

- By bus
- faster than the train. The bus station is just south-west of the centre.

03Best Activities for Teens in Varaždin
Entomological Museum: The World of Insects
The collection in Herzer Palace has a very large number of beetles, moths and butterflies. It ranks among the largest of its kind in the world. Tickets cost €5 for adults and €3 for schoolchildren and students. A family ticket for up to 6 members (2 adults plus children) costs €13. Tickets are sold separately for each department, so a two-museum day can cost more than one ticket.
Old Town Fortress and Drawbridge
The Gothic-Renaissance fortress has housed the City Museum since 1925. The tower and drawbridge are the only surviving parts of the outer fortifications. The castle interior and permanent exhibition were announced as closed for renovation until autumn 2026. Check the City Museum website for the current status before you plan around it. Walking the grounds and the park around the fortress is free.
Museum Opening Hours
City Museum departments are open Tuesday to Friday 9:00–17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 9:00–13:00. They are closed on Mondays and public holidays. Plan museum time for weekday mornings, and use Mondays for the lake, cycling or a day trip.
Cycling Around Town
Varaždin is flat and bike-friendly. A loop through the centre, along the park ring around the Old Town, and out to the City Cemetery takes about an hour at teenage pace. The cemetery was designed as a landscaped park and is protected as a horticultural monument. It is open daily, with longer hours in summer (7:00–21:00 from May to September).
Swimming at Aquacity
Aquacity is a lake with a swimming area, a bar, a fishing zone and free parking, a few minutes outside the centre. Reviews describe clear, clean water. It is a lake, not a water park, so expect swimming and sunbathing instead of slides. It is best from June to August.
Špancirfest in Late August
Špancirfest is Croatia's largest street festival. It runs for about 10 days at the end of August and fills the old town with street performers, theatre, craft stalls and concerts. Teens usually enjoy it more than the museums. Book accommodation well ahead, as rooms fill quickly and prices rise.
04Sample 2-Day Teen Itinerary
Day 1: Morning at the Entomological Museum, then lunch on the main square. In the afternoon, hire bikes and ride to the cemetery and around the Old Town. Dinner in the centre, ending with Countess Maria cake, a local dessert.
Day 2: Swim at Aquacity in summer, or take a half-day trip to Trakošćan Castle in cooler months. Trakošćan is a hilltop castle on a lake and is easy to reach by car.
05Day Trips with Teens
- Trakošćan Castle
- a lakeside castle in the Varaždin County hills. Suitable for a half-day.
- Varaždinske Toplice
- a thermal spa town with the Roman site Aquae Iasae, about 20 km away.
- Međimurje region
- wine country to the north, with cycling routes.
06Local Tips
- Opinion: Don't build the trip around the Old Town interior. With the renovation uncertain, the insect museum, a bike loop and an evening in the pedestrian centre give teens more to do than another room of period furniture.
- Museum tickets are sold per department. Ask about the family ticket before buying individual tickets.
- Most sights are within a 10–15 minute walk of each other, so you do not need a car in town.
- Restaurants are cheaper at lunch. Eat the main meal at midday and keep dinner light.
- Teens who want nightlife will find little outside festival season. Keep expectations modest and plan one evening around a café terrace or event.
07When to Visit
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds. Late August suits families with teens who like festivals. The Varaždin Baroque Evenings classical music festival follows in September.
