01Best Beaches in Cres
Cres beaches are mostly pebble and rock, not sand. The water is clear, the coves are small, and many of the best ones need a walk. Bring water shoes.
Kovačine Beach: Best Beach Near Cres Town
Kovačine lies on a cape just north of Cres town, about a 25-minute walk or 10-minute drive from the centre. It holds a Blue Flag. The water is shallow for a long stretch, which suits young children and weak swimmers. Facilities include changing cabins, showers, toilets, beach bars and a restaurant. Pedal boats and beach volleyball are available. A small red lighthouse on the cape is the usual sunset spot. The beach is busiest in July and August, but it is large enough to find space. A naturist section sits near the Kovačine campsite.
Sveti Ivan Beach: Most Scenic Beach
Sveti Ivan sits under the hilltop village of Lubenice, on the west coast. Lubenice stands at 378 m, and the path down to the cove is steep, narrow and takes around 40 minutes. The beach is pebble, with no services. Take water, sturdy shoes and food. Boat trips from Cres town and from Valun also reach it.
Opinion: Sv. Ivan gets the most attention, but it is a poor choice for families, for hot afternoons or for anyone with bad knees, because the climb back up is the hardest part of the day. For a normal beach day, Kovačine is the better pick. Save Sv. Ivan for a calm morning in June or September.
Krušćica Beach: Quiet Cove Near Merag
Krušćica is a small pebble beach in a protected cove near Merag. The approach is a 15-minute walk down a dirt road through forest. There are no facilities, which keeps crowds low.
Slatina Beach: Best for Dogs
Slatina belongs to the Slatina campsite near Martinšćica. It is a pebble beach with designated areas where dogs can swim, which is rare on the island.

Budget Reality Check
Apartments listed as beachfront in Cres often mean a 2–6 minute walk to a concrete platform or pebble cove, not a private beach. Small studios in the town centre start near €45–€65. Peak weeks (late July to mid-August) cost 30–50% more than June or September.
03Getting to Cres
Pula airport is about 95 km away. Rijeka is the nearest large city. Most visitors arrive by car via the Brestova–Porozina ferry from Istria, or via the Valbiska–Merag ferry from Krk. The Osor bridge links Cres to Lošinj to the south. A car is useful for reaching Krušćica, Mali Bok and Lubenice. Public buses run to Cres town and Mali Lošinj but are infrequent.
04Local Tips
- Arrive at Kovačine before 10:00 in July and August for easy parking and an open spot on the beach.
- Start the Sv. Ivan walk by 09:00 and plan the return climb before the midday heat.
- Check the north coast for Beli, where griffon vultures nest on the cliffs. The Caput Insulae eco-centre is nearby.
- Book beachfront apartments by early spring for July and August. The small units fill first.
- Pack water shoes. Sea urchins live on rocky entries throughout the island.
05Best Time to Visit
June and September offer sea temperatures near 22–24°C, fewer visitors and lower rates. July and August bring the warmest water and the highest prices.
