01Medulin Itinerary at a Glance
Medulin is a small seaside town on the southern tip of Istria, about 10 km from Pula and 5 km from Premantura, the village at the gate of Cape Kamenjak. The town itself is compact: a harbour promenade, pine-shaded rocky and pebble beaches, and a few sandy bays. Its value is as a base. Three days is enough to cover the town, Kamenjak, Pula and the islands offshore without rushing.
| Day | Focus | Cost level |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Medulin beaches, Vižula peninsula, harbour dinner | Low (€0–25 plus food) |
| 2 | Premantura and Cape Kamenjak | Low to medium (€0–20 gate fee plus food) |
| 3 | Boat trip through the archipelago, or Pula | Medium (€45–70 for tours, about €12–15 for the Arena) |
02Best Time to Follow This Itinerary
Swimming is comfortable from late May to late September. July and August are hot and crowded, and the Kamenjak gate fee is highest from 15 June to 15 September. The shoulder weeks (May and the second half of September) are the best balance: the sea is warm enough, parking is easier, and the Kamenjak car ticket is half price. In the 2026 tariff, vehicle fees applied from 2 May to 30 September. Check the official Kamenjak website for the 2027 dates and prices before travelling.
03Day 1: Medulin Town, Beaches and Vižula
Morning: Bijeca and the town beaches
Bijeca is the main sandy beach, about 1 km from the centre, with shallow water that suits young children. Most of the other beaches around Medulin are rock, pebble or concrete platforms under pine trees. Bring water shoes for these. Sea entry is easy and the water is clear. Arrive before 10:00 in July and August to get shade.
Afternoon: Vižula peninsula
Vižula is a short walk or ride from the centre. It holds the remains of a Roman coastal villa and a Bronze Age hill-fort site, and it is a quiet, shaded spot for an hour or two. Walking and cycling paths run along the coast. This is the best place near town for a sunset walk without crowds.
Evening: Harbour promenade
The promenade fills up after 19:00. Fish restaurants and konobas line the seafront, and a main course of grilled fish generally costs €15–25 in season. Menus priced by weight (per 100 g or per kg) are standard for whole fish, so ask the weight before ordering. Confirm the total before the fish is cooked.
04Day 2: Premantura and Cape Kamenjak
How to get to Kamenjak
Cape Kamenjak is a protected landscape at the very south of Istria, reached through Premantura. The entrance is about 7 km from Medulin. You can reach it by car, bike or boat. Walkers and cyclists pay nothing. A bike is the simplest way to avoid the fee and the parking problem, and the road from Medulin to Premantura is mostly flat.
Gate fees (2026 tariff)
| Vehicle (1-day) | Peak, 15 Jun–15 Sep | Shoulder, 2 May–14 Jun and 16–30 Sep |
|---|---|---|
| Moped/motorcycle | €8 | €5 |
| Car | €20 | €10 |
| Camper van | €50 | €40 |
| Bus | €90 | €60 |
Online tickets carry a 10% discount, so a €10 car ticket costs €9 online. A 3-day car ticket costs €25 at shoulder rates. Take a card and some cash: terminals are unreliable at the far end of the peninsula.
What to do inside the park
The peninsula is about 4 km long, with roughly 30 coves, and it is part of the Medulin archipelago, which has 11 uninhabited islets. Most of the coastline is limestone ledges and gravel, not sand. Mali Portić on the east side is a popular cove for families, and there are marked spots for cliff jumping. Dinosaur footprints and a rich flora (around 600 plant species, with orchids peaking from March to May) are part of the park's appeal.
Safari Bar
Safari Bar sits at Mala Kolombarica beach and is the best-known stop in the park. It is open-air, shaded by trees, and has swings above the sea. Cocktails cost €7–10, and beer or wine €3–4. Opening hours listed are 10:00–21:00 daily in season. Entry to the bar is free. It operates from May to September.
The honest verdict: In July and August, don't drive in. A €20 gate fee, a queue at the barrier and full parking lots make the car the worst option. Rent a bike in Premantura or Medulin, ride in for free, and the same day costs less and moves faster.
Practical rules for the day
- Bring at least 2 litres of water per person. Shade is limited on coastal trails.
- Wear closed shoes for the rocky paths.
- Sea urchins are common along the rocks. Water shoes help.
- Follow the posted parking rules. The park has been replacing informal stone barriers with wooden posts and closing some sensitive areas.
05Day 3: Boat Trip or Pula
Option A: Medulin archipelago by boat
Full-day boat trips from Medulin harbour run past Kamenjak, the Porer lighthouse and the islets, with swim stops, a visit to the Golumbera cave and Ceja island, and a cooked lunch. Prices start at roughly €45–50 per person, drinks and lunch typically included. A 3-hour sunset dolphin cruise with drinks starts around €50. Private boat tours start at roughly €360 for a group of six. For active travellers, guided jet ski safaris cost from about €115 per person, and a 2.5-hour quad safari through Kamenjak with a Safari Bar stop starts around €140 for a vehicle of two (it includes the park ticket; a B-category driving licence is required).
Option B: Pula half-day
Pula is about 10 km from Medulin and reachable by local bus (a single ticket costs roughly €2–3) or by car in 20 minutes. The Roman Arena is the main sight, and it is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Allow 1.5 hours for the Arena and 1.5 hours for the old town, including the Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii. Pula needs a half day, not a full one. Most visitors overestimate how long it takes and lose a beach afternoon to it. Go at 9:00 before the heat and crowds, and return to Medulin for a swim at 13:00.
Option C: Brijuni Islands
Brijuni National Park is reached by boat from Fažana, about 25 km north of Medulin, and it takes most of a day. Boat tours with drinks start at about €45 and premium all-inclusive visits with dolphin watching around €70. Choose this if you have already seen Pula.
06Getting Around Medulin
- On foot
- The town centre and main beaches are within 1–2 km of each other.
- By bike
- The best choice for Premantura and Kamenjak. Bike hire is available in Medulin and Premantura.
- By bus
- Local buses connect Medulin with Pula, and Premantura with Pula. The walk from the Premantura bus stop to Safari Bar takes about 1.5–2 hours, so a bike is better.
- By car
- Useful for Rovinj (approx. 55 km) or Fažana, but parking in Medulin fills up by 10:00 in peak season.
07Where to Stay
Medulin has hotels, apartments and large campsites along the coast, and Premantura has apartments and campsites close to the Kamenjak gate. Apartments in the town centre are the most flexible option for three days. For Kamenjak, a base in Premantura puts the gate within walking and cycling range. Book early for July and August.
08Money Tips for Medulin
- Pay the lower shoulder-season Kamenjak fee by visiting in May or the second half of September.
- Buy Kamenjak tickets online for the 10% discount.
- Cycle in and pay nothing.
- Order fish by weight carefully and ask for the total.
- Carry cash for the park gate and beach bars.
09Sample Daily Budget (per person, excluding accommodation)
| Style | Daily cost |
|---|---|
| Budget (beach, picnic, bike) | €25–35 |
| Mid-range (restaurant dinner, one paid activity) | €60–90 |
| Active (boat, quad or jet ski) | €100–180 |
10Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Driving into Kamenjak at midday in August.
- Skipping water shoes on the rock beaches.
- Planning Pula, Brijuni and Rovinj in the same three days.
- Arriving at Bijeca after 11:00 and finding no shade.
- Assuming the 2026 fees and season dates still apply in 2027.
