01How Island Hopping from Slano Works

Slano is a small mainland town on the Dubrovnik Riviera, about 40 km northwest of Dubrovnik. It has no scheduled ferry to the islands. Island hopping from Slano therefore happens in three ways: an excursion boat from the harbour, a ferry from a nearby port, or a skippered or self-drive boat from ACI Marina Slano.

The nearest islands are the Elaphiti group (Koločep, Lopud and Šipan). Mljet is the larger option, and Korčula is possible as a longer trip from Dubrovnik or the Pelješac peninsula.

02Best Way to Island Hop from Slano

Option 1: Elaphiti Day Cruise from Slano Harbour

A family-run operator, Slano Boat Excursions, works from the harbour near the Admiral hotel. It runs Elaphiti cruises, Dubrovnik Old Town trips, sunset cruises and Mljet National Park trips. A full-day Elaphiti excursion from Slano covers Koločep, Lopud and Šipan in about 9 hours. Expect roughly €95–105 per person, and check what is included. Typical packages include swimming stops, a rice or risotto lunch on board, and wine and water.

The main advantage is time. Guests staying in Slano avoid the drive to Dubrovnik, which takes at least 45 minutes each way. The Dubrovnik-departing tours cost less (about €55–95), but the transfer in summer traffic cancels most of that saving.

Option 2: Mljet via Prapratno or by Excursion Boat

Mljet National Park is the strongest single-island day from Slano. Two routes work:

Excursion boat from Slano
A day trip that includes Mljet National Park and several island stops. Park entry is normally paid separately.
Ferry from Prapratno
The Jadrolinija car and passenger ferry runs from Prapratno on the Pelješac peninsula to Sobra on Mljet. Prapratno is about 25 km from Slano by road, past Ston. Allow roughly an hour on the water. Cars can be taken, but in July and August they need booking well ahead.

On Mljet, the park's two saltwater lakes (Veliko and Malo Jezero) are the highlight. A small boat crosses to the 12th-century Benedictine monastery on St Mary's islet in the larger lake. That boat ride is covered by the park entrance ticket.

Option 3: Catamaran from Dubrovnik

The Krilo catamaran serves Dubrovnik, Mljet (Polače), Korčula and further north in summer. A Mljet day trip costs about €30–45 per person, and the crossing takes a couple of hours each way. Book 1–2 weeks ahead for July and August. This option needs a car or taxi from Slano to Gruž port, about 40 km away, and is the weakest fit for a Slano base.

Option 4: Your Own Boat from ACI Marina Slano

ACI Marina Slano is a practical starting point for sailing to the Elaphiti Islands or Dubrovnik. The marina has a restaurant, a grocery and WiFi. Charter skippers usually plan Slano, then Šipan, Lopud and Koločep, then Dubrovnik.

03The Islands Worth Visiting

Koločep

Koločep is the closest Elaphiti island to Dubrovnik. It is car free. The two villages are Donje Čelo (Lower Celo) and Gornje Čelo (Upper Celo), joined by footpaths. The nearby Blue Cave is a common swim stop on excursion boats. Plan about 60–90 minutes on the island.

Lopud

Lopud has the best beach of the group: Šunj, a sandy bay on the island's far side. Walk about 20–25 minutes from the village or take the golf-cart taxi. It also has a ruined monastery and a fortress above the harbour. On a full-day cruise, Lopud is usually where lunch happens.

Šipan

Šipan is the largest Elaphiti island and is known for olive groves. The two main settlements are Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ. The island has old summer houses of Dubrovnik nobility and a quieter pace than Lopud.

Mljet

Mljet is about 100 km² of forest, two lakes and small villages. It suits a full day, and an overnight stay is better. Rent a bicycle at the park to ride around the lakes.

04Sample Itineraries

One Day: Elaphiti Cruise

Board in Slano around 9:00–10:00. Swim at the Koločep caves, have lunch on Lopud, then spend free time in Šipan. Return to Slano in the late afternoon (total 9 hours).

Two Days: Elaphiti Plus Mljet

Day 1 is the Elaphiti cruise. Day 2 is Mljet National Park by excursion boat or via Prapratno and Sobra. Keep a day between them if swimming and sun leave you tired.

Three Days: Add Ston and Mali Ston

Add a half day at the medieval Ston walls and the oyster farms of Mali Ston bay, which have operated for centuries. Both are within easy driving distance of Slano.

05When to Go

June and September
Best balance. The sea is warm and crowds are manageable.
July and August
Hottest and busiest. Book ferries and excursions several days ahead.
May and October
Pleasant walking weather, but fewer departures, and swimming is cool.

Seasonal departures can be cancelled in strong wind (bura or jugo), so keep a flexible day in the plan.

06Local Tips

  • Book boat trips from Slano directly at the harbour or by message the day before; it is simple off-peak.
  • Bring cash. Small island cafes, golf-cart taxis and some boat extras may not accept cards.
  • Carry water shoes. Many Elaphiti beaches are pebbly or rocky, and Šunj on Lopud is the main exception.
  • Choose a shared boat over a private speedboat for a first visit. Private tours carry extras such as an €80 fuel surcharge on some operators, paid in cash on board.
  • Bring a hat. Shade on the islands is limited around midday.

07Honest Verdict

The full-day three-island cruise tries to cover too much. Koločep, Lopud and Šipan each get an hour or so, which suits a first look but leaves little time to walk anywhere. If time allows, a private or half-day boat that stays longer on Lopud is better value than the extra stop.
