01Is There Island Hopping from Vrsar?
Not in the Dalmatian sense. Vrsar has no scheduled inter-island ferry network. The town sits on Istria's west coast, and island hopping here means chartering or boarding a small excursion boat, hiring a taxi boat or renting your own. The coastline between Poreč and Rovinj is made up of sheltered bays, a long fjord and low islets, so most routes are short and calm.
The main departure point is the harbour on Obala Maršala Tita in Vrsar. Boats leave from here, and from the nearby marina in Funtana, from roughly April to October. Most operators run daily in July and August, with fewer sailings in shoulder months.
02Best Island and Coastal Routes from Vrsar
Lim Fjord and Pirate Cave (2.5 hours)
The Lim Fjord is a flooded valley about 10 km long, protected as a nature park. The standard excursion is a wooden "pirate" boat that leaves the Vrsar harbour, cruises into the fjord and stops for a swim near the Pirate Cave. The trip takes about 2.5 hours, and the stop at the fjord lasts under an hour. Prices start around €20 per person, with a €1 fjord entrance fee paid on site. Wine, lemonade and water are normally included.
This is the best first trip for families, because it is short and the water is calm.
Vrsar, Lim Fjord and Rovinj (5–5.5 hours)
This is the closest thing to a true hop. The boat visits the fjord for a swim, then continues to Rovinj, where passengers get about two hours on shore before the return. Prices start around €23 per person, and drinks are included. Rovinj's old town sits on a former island joined to the mainland in 1763, so the route covers both a sea trip and a town visit.
Take a small hat and cash. Rovinj's old-town cafés are priced well above Vrsar's, and a coffee or an ice cream there costs noticeably more.
Rovinj Archipelago (by speedboat or private charter)
The Rovinj archipelago has around 20 islets and islands. The best known are Sveta Katarina, Crveni Otok (Red Island) and Sveti Andrija, all within a few km of Rovinj harbour. Group boat tours from Vrsar rarely land on them, so reaching the islands properly usually means a private skipper or a speedboat tour. Private speedboat trips cost from about €290 for a group of up to six on shorter routes, and from several hundred euros for 4–6 hour archipelago tours.
Koversada and the Vrsar coast
Koversada, just north of Vrsar, is one of Europe's largest naturist resorts. A taxi boat to Koversada or nearby islets costs about €15–€30 for a return trip, depending on distance and party size. Non-naturists should check the rules for each bay before landing. Many of the nearby coves are clothing-optional.
Brijuni National Park (day trip)
Brijuni is a national park of 14 islands. It cannot be reached from Vrsar by boat. Access is by the park's own boat from Fažana, about an hour's drive from Vrsar, and the whole visit runs to a fixed four-hour slot. Adult tickets cost €50 from June to September and €35 for the rest of the year. The price covers the boat, a guided tour, the tourist train and the safari park. Packaged day trips from Pula or Fažana with lunch and a swim stop at Sveti Jerolim cost about €70.
The cheapest approach is to drive to Fažana and buy the park ticket directly. Packages from other towns often add little beyond the transfer.
03Taxi Boats and Boat Rental in Vrsar
Taxi boats link Vrsar, Funtana, Poreč, Rovinj and Novigrad, as well as coastal campsites. Sport Andrea (Vrsar Charter), operating on the harbour front since 1999, offers taxi boats, dolphin tours and boat rental, with or without a skipper.
Boat rental costs about €80–€150 per day plus fuel for a small boat with a low-power engine that needs no licence. Larger and faster boats generally require a skipper's licence, or you hire a skipper.
A few practical rules:
- Stay out of the Lim Fjord's restricted zones and follow the speed limits. The fjord is a protected area.
- Anchoring on seagrass is prohibited in many bays.
- Carry drinking water, as many islets have no shops or shade.
- Check the wind forecast. The bora (cold northeast wind) can make the open water between Vrsar and Rovinj rough within an hour.
04Cost Comparison and What to Choose
| Option | Best for | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Pirate boat to Lim Fjord | Families, short on time | from €20 |
| Lim Fjord + Rovinj | A full half day | from €23 |
| Dolphin watching | Evenings, couples | from about €26 |
| Rental boat | Groups of 4–6 | €80–€150 + fuel |
| Brijuni via Fažana | National park, history | €35–€50 |
A rental boat becomes cheaper per person than tours once a group reaches four. Tours win for solo travellers and couples.
05Local Tips for Island Hopping from Vrsar
Dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, so book the sunset departure on a day with flat water, not on a windy one.
Morning departures are quieter, and the Lim Fjord swim stop is far less crowded before 11:00.
Don't pay extra for "private" Lim Fjord trips. The fjord is short, and a shared boat reaches the same cave and the same water. The money is better spent on a longer Rovinj day.
Don't treat Brijuni as a Vrsar excursion. Operators advertise it, but the two-way drive and the fixed ferry slot mean it takes most of a day. Pick Brijuni only if the park's history interests you, and pick the Lim and Rovinj route if you want swimming.
Swim stops often sit over rocky bottoms, so bring water shoes. The Istrian coast has limestone ledges and sea urchins.
Also look at the Funtana marina option. Some dolphin safaris start there, 5 km from Vrsar, and the walk or short bike ride along the coast is easy.
06Best Time to Go
- June–September
- Warmest sea, most departures, and the highest prices for Brijuni (€50).
- May and October
- Fewer boats, calmer harbours, and some excursions run on reduced schedules. October is still available for Lim Fjord and Rovinj trips.
- November–March
- Excursion boats are mostly not operating. Check the Brijuni timetable before planning a winter visit.
07How to Book
Book online for the main excursions, since many offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Rental boats and taxi boats are usually arranged at the harbour front or by phone. In July and August, reserve at least a day ahead.
