01Quick Overview: Where to Go and How Long It Takes

Novi Vinodolski sits on the Kvarner coast road (the D8 Adriatic Highway), with the A6/A7 motorway reachable via Bribir and Crikvenica. That position gives it a wide range of day trips in both directions. North leads to Crikvenica, Rijeka, Opatija and Krk. South leads to Senj and the ferry ports for Rab. Inland leads to Plitvice Lakes and the Gorski Kotar forests.

A rental car gives the most flexibility. Public buses along the coast run to Rijeka at a reasonable frequency, roughly hourly or better in summer, and take about 1 hour. Routes south to Senj are less frequent, so check the timetable the day before.

02Plitvice Lakes National Park: The Big Day Out

Plitvice is the most popular excursion from Novi Vinodolski. The park lies about 150 km away. The drive takes around 2 hours via Bribir, the A1 motorway and the road through Korenica.

Entry prices (2026 list, the latest published):

  • 1 Jan–31 Mar and 1 Nov–31 Dec: €10 adults, €4 children aged 7–18
  • 1 Apr–31 May and 1 Oct–31 Oct: €23 adults, €6 children
  • 1 Jun–30 Sep: €40 adults before the afternoon cut-off, €25 for later entry, €15 children

The park's electric boat and panoramic train are included in the ticket. Expect 4–6 hours on the trails for the Upper and Lower Lakes combined. Guided day tours from the Rijeka and Crikvenica area usually cost about €100–130 per person, with the park ticket often charged separately. Check the inclusions before booking.

Insider tips:

  • Arrive before 8:30 in July and August. The main entrances fill up by late morning, and the boardwalks become slow.
  • Between June and September, book online in advance. Time-slot tickets sell out.
  • Late October to March is quieter and much cheaper. Parts of the trails may close in winter ice, and the park publishes closures on its site.
  • Rastoke, the watermill village in Slunj, is free to walk through and can be added if you have time. It is a detour, so check the route first.

Plitvice is a long day, with about 4 hours of driving and 5 hours in the park. It is worth it for first-time visitors to Croatia, but not with children under 5 or in a heatwave.

03Rijeka and Trsat Castle

Rijeka is about 38 km from Novi Vinodolski. The drive takes 40–50 minutes, depending on traffic around Bakar and the Kantrida tunnels. Buses take around an hour.

What to see:

  • Trsat Castle stands on a hill 138 m above the RjeÄŤina river. The grounds are free to enter, and there is a cafĂ© on the terrace. The climb from the city is up more than 500 steps (the Petar KruĹľić stairs). Taxis and local buses also go up.
  • Korzo, the main pedestrian street, runs between the City Clock Tower and the Rijeka City Market.
  • The Central Market hall (Gradska trĹľnica) is a good place for a cheap lunch of fish, cheese and pastries.
  • Rijeka's industrial heritage, including the BenÄŤić complex and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, suits rainy days.

Rijeka works well as a half-day trip, especially when combined with Opatija or the Kvarner viewpoints on the way back. It is not a beach destination, so go there for culture and food.

04Island of Krk

Krk is reached by road over the Krk Bridge, about 45 km from Novi Vinodolski to the bridge. Krk Town is about 55 km away. The drive takes 1 hour without summer congestion.

Top stops:

Krk Town
a compact old town with the Frankopan Castle, the cathedral and a harbour promenade.
Košljun
a small island monastery in Punat Bay, reached by a short boat ride from Punat. A return trip costs roughly €10–15 including entry to the monastery.
Vrbnik
a hilltop town on the east coast known for Žlahtina white wine. Tastings at local cellars typically cost €5–15.
Baška
a long pebble beach at the island's southern end. It is about 80 km from Novi Vinodolski, so allow 1 hour 30 minutes each way.

In July and August, leave Novi before 8:00 to avoid the queue on the bridge. Arrive in the afternoon, and the traffic coming back can add 30 minutes.

05Senj and Nehaj Fortress

Senj is the main town south of Novi Vinodolski, about 40 km along the coast road. The drive takes around 45 minutes. The road passes Klenovica, with views of the islands of Krk and Rab.

Highlights:

  • Nehaj Fortress, a 16th-century stronghold built in 1558 for the Uskoks, the frontier warriors who defended the coast. It houses a small museum. Tickets cost roughly €5–7, and the fortress is closed on some winter days, so check before arriving.
  • The old town, with the cathedral, the Frankopan-era streets and the Senj Museum.
  • Bura wind: Senj is known as one of the windiest towns on the Adriatic. On bura days, the coastal road may close to trucks and light vehicles. Check HAK road reports before heading out.

Senj is a good half-day trip that pairs well with the Velebit coastline. It is a better option than a crowded beach day in August.

06Opatija and the Lungomare

Opatija is about 60 km away, a drive of roughly 1 hour via Rijeka. The Lungomare is a 12 km seafront promenade between Volosko and Lovran. It is free to walk and mostly flat.

The usual plan is to park in Opatija or Volosko, walk 3–4 km along the coast, and return by local bus No. 32 (about €2–3). Volosko is the better place for dinner, with a series of small seafood restaurants near the harbour. Prices are higher than in Novi Vinodolski, so expect €18–30 for a main fish dish.

The Maiden with the Seagull statue and the Villa Angiolina park are the other quick stops.

07Rab Island by Ferry

Rab can be done as a full day trip. Drive about 55 km south to Stinica, then take the car ferry to Mišnjak on Rab. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. Ferry service is more frequent from June to September, and the price runs roughly €15–25 per car each way in summer. Confirm the timetable with Jadrolinija or Rapska Plovidba before leaving.

Rab Town has four bell towers, a compact medieval centre and sandy beaches nearby. On the Rab side, Lopar's Paradise Beach is about 30 km from the ferry and has shallow water that suits young children. Allow a full day, and plan the return crossing before the last ferry.

08Smaller Stops Along the Coast and Inland

Several shorter trips fit in a morning or late afternoon:

Crikvenica
(about 15 km): a promenade and sandy-pebble beaches. It is a short drive or bus ride, and it is the nearest larger town.
Bribir
(about 8 km inland): the Frankopan-era fortress and the village on the hill above the Vinodol valley. Entry is free.
GriĹľane and Drivenik
(about 10–15 km inland): small villages in the Vinodol valley, with Frankopan-era castles and local lamb and wine at village taverns.
Risnjak National Park
(about 70 km): a forested mountain park in Gorski Kotar with hiking trails. It is cooler in summer.

09How to Choose: A Decisive Guide

Rijeka by bus. It is the simplest and cheapest trip.
Families with children
Rab (Lopar's sandy beach) or Krk.
History
Senj and Bribir.
Walking
Opatija's Lungomare.

10Practical Tips

Parking
Municipal car parks in Rijeka, Krk and Opatija usually cost €1–3 per hour in summer. Many have time limits.
Timing
In July and August, leave before 8:30 for any trip on the coast road. After 16:00 the return lanes slow down.
Weather
In strong bura winds, the coast road and ferries may be restricted. Always have a backup plan, such as Rijeka.
Cash
Small cafés and some park ticket offices may prefer cash. Keep €20–40 in small notes.
Fuel
Fill up in Novi Vinodolski or Crikvenica. Prices there are often lower than on the islands.
