01Where to Stay in Orebić with Children
The best area for families is the stretch between the town centre and Trstenica Beach. Playgrounds, shops, the promenade and the ferry port are all within walking distance, so a car is not needed for daily life. Most family apartments here have kitchens, air conditioning and parking.
Apartmani Zona
Apartmani Zona is on Josipa bana Jelačića street, in a quiet part of town. It has six units for 2–6 guests and sits 150 m from Trstenica Beach. A playground, shops and restaurants are a few minutes away on foot. A 2+1 studio of 20 m² starts at €42 per night. The 40 m² apartment for 3+2 guests, with a kitchen, living area and covered grill terrace, starts at €72 per night. A larger 4+2 apartment of 45 m² is also available. Direct booking rates change by date, so check the exact dates before planning a budget.
Apartments Trstenica
This beachfront property has family rooms, a garden, a barbecue, air-conditioned bedrooms and kitchenettes. Bicycle and car rental are available on site, and snorkelling is popular nearby. Children of all ages are welcome. The property has no capacity for extra beds in the rooms, so check bed layouts before booking for a family of four or more.
Other Options
Stefan Apartments, close to Trstenica, offers studios, rooms and one larger apartment suited to families. Some seafront rentals on the promenade have private beach access with a gate to the terrace, which helps with toddlers.
Choose an apartment with a kitchen over a hotel room. Children eat early, and self-catering saves a lot compared with restaurant meals three times a day. Ask for a baby cot, extra bed or washing machine when booking, since many hosts supply them on request.
02Best Beaches for Kids in Orebić
Trstenica Beach
Trstenica is the main family beach. It is a long strip of fine pebbles mixed with sandy patches, which is uncommon on this coast. The water is shallow at the start, so small children can enter gently. Pine trees give natural shade, and beach bars, paddleboard rentals and the Trstenica Aqua Park are on site. Space remains available even in high season.
Viganj
Viganj is about 10 minutes west of Orebić by car. It is known across Europe for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with schools and rental equipment. Its pebble beach is relaxed, and a visit suits teenagers who want to try a water sport. Strong afternoon winds make it less suitable for toddlers.
Mokalo
Mokalo, 4 km east of Orebić, has quiet coves and a reef that makes it good for snorkelling with older children.
Trstenica is the right choice for most families. Viganj is better as an afternoon visit than a base for young children, because the wind that draws surfers also makes the water choppy.
03Things to Do with Kids Beyond the Beach
Ferry Trip to Korčula
The Jadrolinija car ferry (line 634) runs between Orebić and Dominče on Korčula in about 20 minutes. A foot passenger ticket costs €2.50 off-season and €4.40 from 29 May to 27 September. Children aged 3–12 pay €1.20 all year. A standard car up to 5 m long costs €10.40 off-season and €16.20 in peak season. For a day trip, go as a foot passenger. A small passenger boat also crosses to Korčula Town, and the whole trip works well for children who like boats. Taking the car across for a day usually isn't worth the extra €16.20 each way in summer.
Mount Sveti Ilija
The mountain above Orebić is the best viewpoint on Pelješac. The full summit hike is too long for young children. Families with school-age kids can walk the lower trails above town in the early morning and turn back before the heat.
Maritime Heritage and Monastery
Orebić has a long seafaring history, and the town's maritime museum and the Franciscan monastery above town are short, low-cost stops on a hot afternoon. Check opening times locally, since hours shift with the season.
Water Sports and Boat Trips
SUP boards and kayaks can be rented at Trstenica. Boat tours run from Orebić to nearby islands, including Mljet National Park, though the full-day format suits children from about 6 years up.
Cycling
Quiet roads through Pelješac wine country suit older children on bikes. Bicycle rental is available at some apartments, including Apartments Trstenica.
04Local Tips for Families
- Book apartments with a parking space. Free street parking near the promenade fills early in July and August.
- Walk the promenade in the evening after 19:00, when it is cooler and children can burn off energy.
- Visit Trstenica before 11:00 or after 16:00 in summer, when shade is easier to find.
- Take water shoes. Pebbles at Trstenica and Viganj are rough on small feet.
- June and September offer warm water, lower ferry fares in late September, and fewer crowds than July and August.
05Getting to Orebić
Orebić is on the Pelješac peninsula, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Dubrovnik by road. The ferry to Korčula leaves from the terminal in town and runs frequently through the day, with early and late departures during peak season.
